The Lord Is My Shepherd (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Not your typical Christian cozy mystery. When church secretary Cindy stumbles over a dead body when unlocking the sanctuary, imagine her surprise. Not a great way to start her monday morning. The rabbi, Jeremiah hearing her scream runs to her rescue. Is it a member of the church? Who else had a key to the sanctuary? Together Cindy and Jeremiah aid the police in tracking the killer. As the bodies begin to accumulate in odd recreations of the Easter story, tension builds in identifying the killer. Intertwined in the story are snipets of the Easter story and the Passover celebration. Kept me guessing and I would read the others in the series. This mystery has the two elements of most good mysteries. (1) A lead character that you can either like or admire (or both) in Cindy and Jeremiah. Cindy in part because she grows stronger through the story and her friendship with Jeremiah, and Jeremiah because of his quiet strength. Having served as a deacon in my church and taught in a Catholic school, I saw realistic characterizations of people in church environments. (Although, this being christian fiction she did ignore the very unchristian-like christians that you do find in some church leadership positions.)(2) A plot which pushes the reader and sleuth in one direction, then off into another direction without the need for an illogical or miraculous revelation. In addition, the cooperation/antagonism between Cindy and Jeremiah with the local police makes the mystery more humorous and entertaining. I think the author does a very nice job of illustrating the cooperation and affection that can and should exist between people of faith.
