Pecan Pie Baby (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

About a little girl who doesn't want her mom to have another baby. This book is a great book for introducing alternative families because in the book there is no father. Gia and her mother live alone together. Also when her aunts and uncles come over, not all of them are the same race. These different family arrangements introduce to young readers the idea that a family's identity can be made up of many different combinations, not just a two parent home with everyone the same race. Great book. It depicts a middle child or children who may be feeling left out. The illustrations are comforting and beautiful. This book relates to my topic because of the many cultural groups depicted in the story. The characters represent a variety of culture groups. There is diversity represented in the story, and the book includes a rich thick plot. This book came in a package of books that were tossed on my desk sometime late this summer. I have never been told what this package of books is for but suspect that it is to work with our writing curriculum.I read this before I left work this evening.I like the voice used in the story. One can really feel the frustration of the daughter who is jealous of the "ding-dang" baby that is on the way. It's a touching story. I like that the mother agreed with the girl that she is going to miss the way life currently is. So many stories about new babies do not stress adequately the feelings of the older child. I also liked how the mother refused to ship out the daughter with the grandmother.]]The language is good. There are good opportunities for writers to learn from here. The use of pecan pie to link the family members together is good. Familiar things for the reader to anchor to throughout a text is good.****18 October 201322 October 2013
