La Pista Di Sabbia (2007) - Plot & Excerpts

I had saved this new Montalbano to read while Viking in Sicily, and it didn't disappoint. If I criticise then the story isn't as strong as the character (singular), and the other role players. However, Conan-Doyle had the same difficulty. Salvo's character gets stronger by he book. He is the archetypal Sicilian guy, and he assembled police around him are generally portrayed as fools. I have never come across a series of books before where food means so much. Mealtimes are described in detail, and in many ways Camilleri writes a brochure for the Sicilian tourist board. It would be wrong to say the books don't vary in subject matter, they certainly do. Mafia lies at the root, but shouldn't it? A lot of fun! Another very enjoyable Montalbano mystery. Salvo finds a dead horse on the beach in front of his home. The title refers to a dream that Salvo has, wherein he is riding a horse (not likely in real life!) and he finds that he and the horse are going down the wrong track, and that they are sinking into the sand. It also refers to the tracks in the sand leading from where the animal was killed to where it was deposited on the beach. Salvo does have a number of pertinent dreams in this book! There is a dead person in this mystery, but the bigger issue is a tale of two horses. And is it possible that Salvo is going to cheat on Livia yet again? Oh no!
