Fool (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Fool is crass and vulgar and ridiculous and really quite entertaining. As a Shakespeare nerd and a fan of the original character of the fool in King Lear, I was pretty excited to read this retelling of Lear from the fool's perspective. It was better than I was expecting it to be, and the backstory given to the fool Pocket was surprisingly enjoyable and even emotional at times. While Moore takes many liberties with Lear and throws in references to a multitude of other Shakespeare plays, I was surprised to spot more than a few direct quotes from the original play. It was a great mixture and a really fun read. Fool by Christopher Moore is a hilarious novel about a fool (Pocket) trying to stop his world from collapsing. When a king who is to old to rule ruins his life, Pocket tries to fix it. Pocket has to deal with supernatural things along with the his self. Pocket must race to undo all harm the king has done. There are quite a few things I like about this book. The characters are very different from the large pool of characters from which many authors choose. Pocket embodies what all kids want to be able to do, speak their mind to people with authority. The king is the opposite of what the traditional king is. The daughters are just so strange in their own way but all tie into Pocket. It's very funny! There's some cynical remark or bawdy joke every page. The flashbacks help Pocket stand out as a very strange man as they fill in his back story.I highly recommend Fool. The humor kept me entertained the entire book. If you don't mind a bit of sexual mischief and made up words you would enjoy this book.
