Faith, Hope, And Ivy June (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

A nice realistic fiction that surprised me. Ivy June and Katherine come from very different worlds, although the same state. The exchange program between the schools was an interesting idea, and it's good for kids to understand that in this day of cell phones and computers and such, there are still people around who live in a very rustic way. The many problems that happened in the story seemed to be a stretch, but kids will appreciate them and not even realize that it's a stretch. I think my female students will like this book. I picked this book up because the title was cute and I needed another book (even numbers on my library card...) And I was surprised at how well I liked it. If you've ever read a book, that just embodies it's main theme so well, that everything else, the characters and plot and setting, are just the pieces used to create the whole picture. The theme was basically the tension between poor and better-off, and everything was vivid and so well described I really felt like I was right there. It wasn't the best book in the world, but it's the kind of book that fills you up and made you feel something, and those are my favorite kind.
