Dinosaur Planet Survivors (2002) - Plot & Excerpts

First half of book is a continuation of Dinosaur Planet, which had many unresolved story lines. In this sequel, the crew members awaken after 43 years, acclimate to their surroundings slowly over many days, encounter the giffs (later identified as pteranodons), and discover the mutineer colony. No action takes place - only descriptions of the planet flora and fauna. The meeting with the descendants of the mutineers takes only one short paragraph. The book takes a bizarre turn in the second half. Three rescue ships arrive; first one, then another, then another. There are tangents and story lines having nothing to do with the plot, and long passages where nothing happens, and a strange dinner party. There are many characters and concepts which come and go without any logic or purpose; in addition to the 19 original characters, I counted 25 new characters and 36 concepts or things, some of which are never defined or explained. I feel the author insults the readers with her writing style; sample "The Thek are a long-lived race who keep their own counsel, vouchsafing to us poor ephemerals only such information as they consider us worthy to receive." Any idea what she is talking about. ONE OF THE WORST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ.

Dinosaur Planet Survivors by Anne McCaffrey is the second book in the Ireta series. This book takes place 43 years after the events which took place in Dinosaur planet and in many ways answer many of the questions which were raised in that book. The survivors of the mutiny are woken up by Tor, Kai's Thek friend. As the survivor's reacquaint themselves with the planet they discover that there are many survivors of the mutineers as well. However the neighborhood is soon tto become much more exciting as the mutineers have called up a heavy world colonist vessel which is preparing to rape the planet. At the same time Tor has informed the neighboring world of them and they have sent a rescue vessel and the navy arrives chasing after the colony vessel. Soon after the Theks arrive in force and start an excavation of the planet. In the end the questions about the Theks and about the heavy worlders are better answered. Sometimes it hurts when we realize that those whom we have placed as gods are proven to be fail able and this happens to both of the two groups. The presence of Sassinak who is the commander of the navel ship which rescues the ship also makes a tie into the next book in this universe.

What do You think about Dinosaur Planet Survivors (2002)?

I also grabbed this one off the cafe shelf, but with some amusement, because I vaguely remembered reading it in junior high when McCaffrey was one of my favorite authors.Despite the lurid title and cover, it's actually a pretty good sci-fi tale, although it is pretty cliche.But... Well, I found the protagonists to be assholes, and there was just this huuuuuuuuge plot hole that drove me crazy at the end of it.[SPOILERS:]So, these dinosaurs were transported from earth to this planet 6 or 7 million years ago by the rock people. Great, OK, I can buy it. But... they haven't evolved at all in all that time? That, no, I'm not going to buy that.
