Who Is That, Cat The Cat? (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

Cat the Cat sure likes her friends, and she introduces the very youngest readers to her world, where there are surprises waiting! (Goodreads summary)Cat the Cat, Who Is That? by Mo Willems is perfect for toddlers with shorter attention spans, or for preschoolers & kindergartners learning to sound out words. Aimed at a young audience, it has both regular text and word ballons, plain backgrounds, word repetition, and a variety of bug eyed friends of cat. The theme is friendship. The humorous illustrations carry the story. For Toddlers, Preschoolers, Kindergarteners and fans of Mo Willems. Who is that, Cat the Cat? is in board book form! It differs slightly from the original easy reader, but still adorable. Text transferred over nicely - big and bold print - as well as the colorful illustrations. The strange and amusing Blarggie, Blarggie shows up at the beginning and the end of the book this time around. The little ones enjoy this story and you'll find them walking around the house saying, "Blarggie, Blarggie!"Reviewed from a library copy.

What do You think about Who Is That, Cat The Cat? (2014)?

This is my 20-month-old's current favorite. What a shame that it has been hiding away in the Easy Reader section of the library so we hadn't found it before. There's a whole world of picture books over there we need to discover because we've only been in the children's section. The book is extremely simple and quick to read. The characters are cute. Our family has had many chain reactions of "blarggie, blarggie" since we first read it.

Presentation is misleading. It really works best for the sticky-fingered rugrat crowd as it is so very simple, and therefore it should be a board book rather than a picture book. Other than that, it does what it sets out to do (help an earliest beginning reader learn and stay motivated and keep mom/caregiver close for the tricky words and laugh every time for many rereadings) and it does it very well.

As the first book my son ever read all by himself, it is always going to be 5 stars for my family.
