Water In The Park: A Book About Water And The Times Of The Day (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Inspired by the many hot summer days the author spent at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, this story gives readers a day-in-the-life experience in a park on a hot day. Readers see how the different visitors use the park and the water over the course of the day. Pencil and ink wash illustrations assembled/colored digitally. My favorite moments in the book were anything involving the dogs. Everything was exactly right about their behavior, right down to the sounds of their panting. PreK-2. The sun is just beginning to rise, but a few dogs are already arriving at the park for a morning swim. As the day progresses babies, mothers, children, dog-owners, and people on their lunch break all visit the park and use the water in the sprinklers, pond, drinking fountain, etc. Water in the Park successfully combines two concepts that are not usually linked in picture books. Language is fun and whimsical: "a stripey cat creeps from beneath a bush and laps a quiet puddle" and brings the otherwise simple concept book to level that will be enjoyed by the older preschool set as well toddlers. The delightful illustrations are interesting to look at and full small details. Graegin is careful to represent a variety of different skin tones, hair textures, body types, ages, etc.
