Ellie is a vicar's daughter who grew up with the 3 brothers who are the sons of the Duke of Greycliffe. She fell in love with the middle son, Ned, when she was 9 years old. Ned married her best friend who died in childbirth. Ellie was his strong support during the 4 years he mourned. He could always depend on her - and he considered her "like a sister."Every year, the Duchess has a house party in order to match up couples. The hope is these matches will become marriages. In fact, she has been so successful, she is known as the Duchess of Love.This year, Ellie has decided that Ned will never see her as an actual woman, so she will try to find happiness with one of the young men the Duchess of Love has brought for her.There are misunderstandings, and secrets and people with hidden agendas. This becomes almost like a farcical stage play.Of course the most interesting part of the plot is Reggie. He is a cat who is a thief. He steals from guests and particularly loves to take some bright red drawers from Ellie. And everything he steals, he brings to Ned's room as an offering to the one he adores. There is humor and that is always appealing to me. Ellie and Ned are both attractive characters. But, in reality the Duchess and Duke and Ned's brothers Jack and Ashton are very entertaining too. Ellie has a well developed sense of humor and a great deal of intelligence. It is hard to imagine that she would continue to pine for someone who never sees her very clearly. And even harder to believe that after all these years Ned would not notice what everyone else has noticed, she loves him.It is a well written book and I will look for other books by this author. I look forward to finding the same humor and a well conceived book when I read another book by Ms MacKenzie.If you like romance with humor and interesting plots, this book will be fun for you. And reading should be fun. This is the first book I've read by this author. I've read a few short stories so I wanted to read a full length book.This story was a light, fun read, and I enjoyed it. I loved the red drawers and a cat that steals. The heroine, Ellie, was likable, but the hero, Ned, was a bit too stuffy for me. I felt like Mr. Humphrey was based on Mr. Collins in Pride and Prejudice, just without a benefactor. :) I look forward to reading the stories of the brothers, Jack and Ash. Ash is already married, but I think there is a story there.
