The Red Pyramid: The Graphic Novel (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

4 1/2* My fault, but I am having trouble following all the Egyptian gods. Thank goodness the little boy I'm reading with is good at it, otherwise we'd be in trouble!!!Totally engaging for kids who like myths (and this 9 year old does) and action packed and fun. My only whinge about it is that there isn't another one; I am now on a serious hunt for other mythology books for 9 year olds. No easy task!!! Thinking about finding an artist and writing my own.... I really enjoyed reading The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan. Sadie and Carter Kane are not just your average teenager siblings. Their mom passed away when they were younger and Carter stayed with his dad and Sadie moved in with her grandparents. Carter and his dad travel the world to study the Egyptian pyramids and Sadie lives a normal teenage life in London, England. They only see each other twice a year and are more like strangers than brother and sister. Until one night when Carter and their dad Julius come to visit and he promises to “make things right”. They go to an Egyptian museum the last place Sadie wanted to visit on Christmas. Julius tells Sadie and Carter to wait outside the Rosetta stone exhibit but they don’t listen. As they watch from afar they see Julius writing glowing Egyptian hieroglyphics into the Rosetta stone. All of a sudden the Rosetta stone shatters everywhere and there is a giant explosion. A man with a terrifying face and an evil laugh appears. He says he name is Set, something about Julius releasing all 5 gods, and the power of chaos is rising. He and Julius fight and they disappear. Sadie and Carter are taken by the police home and they are questioned. The police threaten to take them to jail until their long lost uncle Amos appears and persuades the cops to let them be deported. They are forced to leave their grandparents and go to America with their uncle they hardly know. When they arrive Amos explains that they have the blood of the Egyptian pharaohs, the strongest in centuries. He explains they will have to train and defeat Set the god of chaos. They have many struggles along the way being partially posed by gods, fighting clay men, and even making the choice between saving their father or the world. I liked this book but I don’t think it was quite as good as the last book I read by Rick Riordan The Mark of Athena. I think the reason why it was better was that it was the third book in the second series so the characters and plot was much more developed. They relationships with between characters are much more developed and I know them a lot better. But the story, suspense, and action are equally good. I enjoyed them both and look forward to reading more books by him.
