The Ranch (2004) - Plot & Excerpts

In Danielle Steel's The Ranch, this emotional romance was about three friends from college who lost touch in twenty years and moved on with their lives. For one summer, they reunite at a ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming to share confidences and become honest with one another--these women had successful careers and were also mothers and wives. For Mary Stuart Walker, who was married to a Manhattan lawyer for 22 years. She kept her busy with volunteer work and masked the loneliness she had, when she feared her husband would blame her for her son's death. For Tanya Thomas, an award-winning singer and pop star who lived in Bel Air, California, who enjoyed the perks of fame and success, but experienced a broken heart of having no children and men who had taken advantage of her. As for Dr. Zoe Phillips, a single mother of an adopted two-year-old child, who worked at an AIDS Clinic in San Francisco. She never married either, since her work was a full-time job for her, until she learned some unexpected news that changed everything for th

I realized about two thirds of the way through this book, which I had been devouring ever since I started to read it, that I had in fact read this book once before. And I loved it the second time through as well. I enjoyed the three main characters so very much, and I feel like I could identify with all in some way, even though they all are written as very successful women, and having all achieved an extraordinary standard of living, neither of which applies to me. I am highly recommending this book for a nice read, and happy endings, even though tragedy is woven throughout the entire story. At this time in my life, however, I do not feel the need to keep this book on my shelf. Too much has changed in me since the first time I read it, and too much hits home in it for me to want to read it again. But I believe it to be a fantastic book, and it makes me miss the mountains more than I already do.

Some of the ones she wrote prior to 1995 are pretty good like Jewels, Fine Things, The Gift, Palomino. Those are a few I recall fondly.....of course I read them mannnnny years ago so I may not be remembering them well or my tastes may have changed since then. Like I said, I think if you stick to her earlier works you will like them. Check the inside cover for publication dates and if they are prior to 1995 give the book a shot and see what you think.
