The Hungry Season (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

I really, really liked this book. It's not a "thriller", it doesn't have a ton of climatic scenes, etc. BUT, I adored the author's writing style and how she REALLY seemed to get inside every one of the characters. As I read, I felt like she had a real grasp of what each character was going through (which helped ME understand it). She had an interesting interpretation of "hunger" and I loved how at the end, I realized she meant literal hunger as well as a hunger among humans to have other humans to support them. The ending was fantastic and I found myself flying through the last 50 pages to see what would happen.I'd definitely recommend it, but again, don't go into it expecting a ton of drama or excitement. But read it to appreciate the author's amazing talent of feeling what each character is dealing with in their lives. Competent but not inspiring, this novel tells the story of a family grieving the loss of a teen-aged daughter to anorexia. It's well crafted enough that I wanted to know what would happen to the characters, and I did enjoy the twists that led up to the climax. Will I remember these characters? I don't think so. The least satisfying moments were those where the family members began to thaw emotionally. I found them strangely unmoving. But, the flow of the writing was good (except for some real misfires in the copyediting: commas separating subject from verb and other glaring uglinesses) and I was never bored. That is saying something.
