The Hero's Guide To Saving Your Kingdom (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Fantastic! I laughed out loud many times throughout the book. If I have any fault at all in this book, it's that the climax isn't quite as climactic as I would've hoped. Perhaps I'd just set my expectation too high because the rest of the book was so great. It really is a must-read for anybody who enjoys reading middle-grade books or anyone looking for a good laugh, sometimes at the expense of Disney and of our classic fairy tales.Loved it! Cute. Really funny. Just what I needed to get me back into reading after a long struggle with my last book. Most of the humor really worked for me -- I think my only critique is that occasionally the intentionally anachronistic jokes (like an I Heart Liam sign, among others) felt like they were trying a little too hard. But otherwise, I really enjoyed this take on classic fairy tales. I appreciated, too, that while this book is primarily about the boys, the girls were not useless and/or entirely left out, as I had feared. Ella is a fantastic heroine, and Lila is a lot of fun. Snow, Rapunzel, and Sleeping Beauty are all very different women, which I appreciate. As far as the boys go, I definitely like Frederick and Liam the best.I laughed a lot reading this. I could see reading it to my (theoretical) children someday, and I will certainly check out the sequels.
