The First Pillar (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Despite what some readers on Amazon think, this book seems very much in its infancy. It's as though the author finished the first draft and sent it online, instead of going over the story again and getting it properly edited. There are numerous misspellings and sentence structure errors. The story and characters themselves are rather meaningless, a lot of the content questionable. What type of college is this; prestigious but full of slackers that don't do anything but play games. The story bounces between Owen, the MC and the Keeper Carwyn as we see through his memories. This is done in a very confusing manner, it took me sometimes a few paragraphs to notice that I was now in a different character. The entire story is told from start to finish, almost nothing is actually shown. It's as if your friend just blandly tells you what's going on with a monotone voice but uses words with great expression. Unfortunately we never actually see those expressions or actions or much of anything play out. Everything is just being told to us.The most disappointing feat is how the most important tournament is skimmed. One paragraph for game a, one to share for games 2 and 3...etc. There is no actual tension, it just begins and he completes his challenges perfectly with no explanation required. The story itself is not bad and there is even a sense of cool magical wonder but the author needs to show us. ‘Everville, The First Pillar’ is what I’d call an epic high fantasy novel and Roy Huff tells the story in the same way as J. R. R. Tolkien’s ‘Lord of the Rings’.Owen ventures into Everville and is given a quest by the Keeper. He is the kind of hero who accepts the quest without moaning about it too much. I liked that. A reader can’t skim through the book. If you do, you’ll miss bits you will need to keep up with the story. The story is involved and some readers might find it complicated. I can only tell you, I liked it. I also liked the way it, as the first book, ended. I hate cliff-hangers as book endings in a series.Owen is a likable hero and his friends, Anika and Dante, are too. There’s plenty of baddies helping the enemy, the Other In Between. The cover is terrific too.
