The Chamber (2005) - Plot & Excerpts

The Chamber, by john Grisham is a book starting off in the time plagued by racial discrimination, as Sam Cayhall, one of the main characters commits a bombing just because a Jewish lawyer is helping blacks get fair trials and is caught. Then he is later accused of committing racial discrimination, and gets sentenced to the death penalty, but this doesn't happen for a long time. So in the process, his grandson, who is a lawyer is given a chance to help his grandfather get rid of the penalty. However, through all of the process that they go through trying to help the grandfather, in the end his death penalty gets carried out and he is killed by way of gas chamber, thus the title, the chamber.I think that the main theme of this book is forgiveness because throughout the book his grandson is learning to forgive his grandfather for the heinous crime that he committed in cold blood because of race. Also Sam learns to forgive himself and knows that he deserves what he got. Also, I think another theme is regret, because throughout the book Sam regrets what he did and knows that it was wrong. Lastly I think that the theme is family, because even though his grandson knows that his grandfather committed a brutal crime, he still loves him and is willing to stand up for him and that justice is served, not revenge.I would recommend this book to people that don't only like happy endings, because by no means is the end of the book happy as he gets killed in the end. I would also recommend this book to people to people that like realistic storyline, that are still very captivating, because even thought the setting of the book is in the '90's it is still very realistic because the death penalty/ capital punishment is still very much an active way of penalty around the world for people. I wouldn't recommend this book to people who are disturbed easily because even though it only happens in the end, the author goes into detail about the death row inmates, and the gas chamber itself. Overall, a very good book.

I generally was not a John Grisham fan. I had read "Peligan Brief" many years ago and found it too detailed and too boring. This is not the way I felt about this book - so John Grisham, you have earned your way back into my reading library. The Gas Chamber is being prepared....time is running out - - Will this client be set free? John Grisham takes you through every emotion - - liking this client and even somewhat accepting perhaps of what he did - - to hating this guy and wanting to pull the gas line on him yourself. I found myself biting my nails as I got near the ending.....I almost felt time was running out for me! In the literature world everyone loves a 'happy' ending...which would mean the guy would get set free and live a forgiving life....but does he? Can you, while reading, come up with a solution as to why this guy should/should not be set free. He freely admist the crime...that is never the question....then what else is there to say? A lot!!! You'll find yourself grabbing every minute you can to read the next paragraph......

The Chamber was based on a man fighting on Death Row for the murder of an African American boy and blowing up a shop with a Jewish family. He soon realizes he has a nephew Adam, in Law to help him exonerate him from the heinous crimes. It is a compelling story and it shows the realization of how back in the day when they had signs posted that African Americans and Caucasians were not allowed to ride the same buses together and interracial relationships were forbidden. It truly is deep, touching and sickening at times! Sometimes you feel for the character and sometimes you hate them.It is based on Sam CaHall Story. A must read.

I have strong feelings and opinions related to this book that delves deeper into the issue of "an eye for an eye" as it relates to the judicial systems of the day. A great side story about a member of the KKK after the civil war during the segragation conflict. Being from a rural southern area, riding around as a child with a father who always kept a "nigger knocker" under the seat, and having family that still refuses to grasp the concept of nonjudgmental equality, I really thought this book showed the true side of descriminatin and reverse discrimination that could cause one to reflect on their belief system regarding the death penalty.
