But she wasn’t and now her life was in jeopardy. She couldn’t see a thing and the tape that the killer placed over her eyes was pinching her lids and giving her an instant headache. She could feel her eyelashes and eyelids sticking to the tape. She was perspiring, practically dripping with sweat from unsuccessfully trying to fight off her attacker and from pure fear. His voice and every move he made echoed in the wet tunnel that reeked of garbage and decaying roadkill. She knew the man before her was the killer, the one everyone was looking for and she recognized the man’s voice. She knew she’d heard it somewhere before. She wondered if John knew how much she loved him. She never told him and she was so busy acting tough, trying to be so damn unaffected by him that he probably didn’t love her, too. The fault would be her own, all brought on by the pressure of her job, being a respected female officer, and being sure everyone knew she earned her position and she hadn’t used the weapon between her legs to obtain it.
