Promise Me Forever (2006) - Plot & Excerpts

I have read this book at least a dozen times, and it still remains one of my absolute favorites. This book does belong to a series ( Lost Lords ) but can be read as a stand alone book. Which is how I read it the first time. It wasn't until sometime later that I found out it belonged to a series . Which , when I found out I Preceded to go out and buy every book in the series lol.  Lorraine Heath is an outstanding author and I have read just about every historical romance she has written.  She writes some of the most heart-wrenching, swoon-worthy  stories out there. You can't help but fall in love with her hero's and heroines. There are some major ,epic loves scenes in this story. Which will have you laughing , giggling, sighing, blushing ....and falling head over heels in love.  Yes , totally EPIC. TOM and Laurens story isn't just a regular happily ever after tale. No this is a love story of all love stories. Tom and Lauren fall in love at an early age , heart -wrenching inseparable love. But when Lauren is forced to move to England with her family , Tom promises that one day he will make it back to Lauren. Years later Tom an Lauren have grow up and live in very different worlds .Lauren in the ballrooms of London and Tom on the ranches in Texas. But one day Tom is surprised  to find out that hes no normal farm hand. But a Lord.  Which brings him to Lauren.  They make their way back to each other but with all the years spent apart do they really still belong together ?  If your a lover of historical romance, a big fan of Lords and Ladies and Fancy dresses and ballrooms , and a magical tale of finding love , not once but twice. Then this is the story for you. Or if you've never read a historical romance, this would make a great first !

Promise Me Forever is a thoroughly mediocre book. The characters are too one-dimensional (and practically perfect), the writing is overly dramatic, and there is no real tension or conflict. My favorite parts of the book were the flashbacks to Lauren and Tom as teenagers in Texas, which are told with plain language and humor. Unfortunately, the writing because flowery and over-worked when describing the pair as adults in England.("He blanketed her mouth" and he "plowed his hand through her rich tresses." Yuck and Ouch!) What little tension there is in the story centers around Lauren's determination to leave England and return to Texas, even though her lost-love has now appeared as a long-lost Earl, or Duke, or something. That premise gives the author an opportunity to create conflict and tension, to part the lovers before they are sure of their feelings, to place other people between them as foils, or to give an opportunity for an emotional talk about their reservations on being reacquainted as adults. While all these plot devices have been used and re-used, at least they would be preferable to basically no conflict and very little tension. The final chapter of the book was sappy enough to give you cavities, and while part of the epilogue was enjoyable, the ending is also too sweet too stomach.ETA: I enjoyed Heath's contemporary book, Smooth Talkin' Stranger.

What do You think about Promise Me Forever (2006)?

Tom and Lauren have loved each other since their childhood in Texas. They are separated when Lauren moves with her family to England, Tom promises to come for her when he has enough money to provide for them and bring her back to Texas. Years later Tom finds out he is the long lost Earl of Sachse. Lauren is shocked. She thinks he abandon her,but things are not as they seem, because someone has interfered in their relationship. This story was amazing very well written, great characterization, great banter between all of the characters, very good back story. This was what a real Romance Story should be like. Ms Heath took the story from their childhood to the very end of their lives!!! I have not read a story this romantic and moving in a long time!!! I couldn't put this book down!!! Its a Keeper!! Thank You Ms. Heath and I look forward to reading more of your books.!!

This is the second time I would say that Lorraine Heath's story is magical. This story, Promise me Forever, is as magical as her other stories I have read. So far I'm not yet disappointed.Promise me Forever is a story about love found too prematurely, lost then found again. The choice of words might be cheesy or redundant but it can be forgiven nonetheless, because what shines the most if the story between this two people in love. The end is achingly poignant. It didn't fail to make me smile because the ending pointed that love can go beyond eternity. The title was apt because it told how love between this two lasted--forever.It is saddening that Heath is underrated when she deserves to have a great place in HR world because she is just a good writer. This isn't the last time I would read from her. I would continue reading the rest of the story she has to share. :)
—Poetry to Prose

Tom and Lauren fell in love as teens in Texas. Shortly thereafter, Lauren's family took her to London to live. Tom promised to write every day, but Lauren never received any letters. After 10 years, he suddenly appears in her drawing room. He's just found out he's the lost Earl of Sachse and has come to take over the responsibilities of his position. They are both still drawn to the other, but Lauren is miserable in London. She wants to go home to Texas. Tom tells Lauren he wants her to help him learn the rules of the Ton. In exchange, he'll pay her passage back to Texas - knowing that this will take her away from him forever.Ms. Heath is very good at describing the differences between being a man in Texas and a man in London. She also describes the expectations of propriety, especially for women, in London. Conversely she is able to convey the hypocrisy of those expectations, showing young ladies needing to behave a certain way just to land a husband. Real friendships are hard to find after you sift through the gossip and the cattiness.I loved the relationship between Tom and Lauren. The times they spent together, just talking, coming to know one another again, were especially well-written. It was easy for me to see how they fell in love with one another again, and I felt the pain and uncertainty of the decisions they were making.Although a lot of people complained about the epilogue, it didn't bother me. I would have been just as happy to not have it in the book, however.
