Poppy And Ereth (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

I didn't like how Rye died, but it opened a whole new opportunity for an adventure. When poppy got caught by a bat, who thought Poppy was a moth, it made an even bigger adventure. but when Spruce went looking for Poppy, he discovered the fire that started on Bannock Hill! While he was hiding, he heard loud galloping and a soft plop and went out and found Poppy! They went to "Poppy's funeral" and she told her kids to go out in different directions to see if the fire had surrounded them, and it had. Then they called in Luci the bat and told her to get every bat to carry them to safety. Ereth refused to get carried by a bat, but finally agreed when Poppy told him the cave floor was made of his favorite food, salt! As he was getting carried away, he screamed,"bring me to the salt!" After the fire stopped, Poppy,Spruce, and Ereth moved north with the bats to an old mine. And that how it ends. It leves you hanging. To bad Avi said this was the last book. Maybe they will continue, but instead of the Poppy series, they will be the Ereth series! :) This is a delightful book. The book is about two old friends, a mouse and a porcupine, and the development of their friendship through age and change. Poppy loses her love and has to find herself again after a period of grief. Ereth is a funny little porcupine. Ereth really loves his best friend Poppy and struggles with his emotions while Poppy distances herself from him. Ereth, albeit bad-tempered, is at times hilarious. My kids and I laughed out loud through out this book. My son’s favorite parts were Ereth’s cranky expressions and insults. There is another very serious side to this book which deals with these two friends’ bereavement. Poppy grieves the loss of his love, and Ereth grieves at first loosing his friend to grief and then believing his friend to be dead. Avi’s gift of prose makes this book special. We very much enjoyed reading it.
