SPOILERSIn general this was a fun read but the sudden and completely unsupported decision of the group to start hating orcs again really left a bad taste in my mouth. And that's not due to the concept itself, but rather the missed opportunity it represents. Setting up the orcs as something other than generic evil-for-evil's-sake bad guys was a really bold and interesting move, and returning them to that stereotype could have been equally as bold and interesting (if that is indeed the end-game), in my opinion. While Drizzt resists his friends' assertions regarding the nature of orcs, primarily due to the obvious inferences it has about the nature of dark elves, it's not like those assertions are particularly compelling. They basically just say, "Nah, we were wrong about that. They're bad." Lots of surprises here. This book has Drow politics, drider revenge, of course Lolth, old enemies, old friends, and my hero, Drizzt. The Companions are traveling, trying to right a wrong and save a friend. Then they get sidetracked. Lots of great fight sequences are in there too. There’s a couple of OMGs at the end that are wonderfully twisty. This is great good fun. One of the best adventure stories I’ve read this year. Received free copy for review.
