Midnight Sacrifice (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I highly recommend reading them in order as they are not really stand alone novels. Midnight Sacrifice picks up the huge plot line left open in Midnight Exposure and brings it to a conclusion. In Midnight Exposure we met Jayne who inardvertently put herself into the sights of a ritual killer, when she was kidnapped her brothers came to the rescue. Danny Sullivan had been medically discharged from the army and was suffering from PTSD when he went to try and save his sister, he ended up saving Mandy instead and unfortunately the killer escaped. Now four months later his sister isn't sleeping, she's plagued with nightmares as the police investigation has came to a stand still and she needs a resolution in order to get on with her life. Danny returns to Maine with the intention of getting to the bottom of what is going on. When he encounters Mandy again there is an attraction there but he soon becomes aware that she is keeping secrets and possibly knows more than she has previously admitted to. Can he convince Mandy to trust him? People are disappearing again and suspicions are rife - can they get to the bottom of it before it's too late? A little slow in places but good. Melinda Leigh’s Midnight Sacrifice is an awful lot like the first book in this series, Midnight Exposure except this time the madman targets and traps quite a few individuals. It features B&B owner, Mandy Brown and veteran soldier, Danny Sullivan as they team up to hunt down the killer. They also manage to have a steamy romance on the side, so steamy that they get together while searching for missing co-eds. We do find out more about the killer, learning first-hand about some of his family’s history. That was kind of interesting although it is hard to feel sympathetic towards him, especially since he drags and drugs his own child around as a witness to his horrible exploits.I had a hard time getting through Midnight Sacrifice. It seemed very long to me and then the ending just wrapped up too quickly. It was also somewhat unbelievable, especially considering some of the characters’ actions. For example, although I did like the introduction of a museum curator as a character (as the expert in Celtic artifacts) why did she have to be a tall, leggy blond who just goes off with Danny’s brother to find her stolen relics. Sure, she might lose her job but she’s not going to try and use legitimate means to find the museum’s property? She just goes off with some stranger she finds going through her office?

I only made it about 30% into this before I put it down. Maybe if I'd read the prior book?
