Midnight Vengeance (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I liked the pace of the this book. It reminded me of an easy to watch action film, perhaps something you'd watch on a Friday night while enjoying some forbidden take-out. The pace was fast without feeling rushed and the author allowed the reader to fill in some of the gaps so as not to slow the pace. We meet the hero and heroine just as their relationship begins to blossom. I thought this gave a feeling of the reader already knowing the characters. The heroine's ability to understand all the unspoken feelings that the hero is desperately trying to communicate but just can get out in spoken words was beautiful. It made me feel this the couple had formed a deep connection.I got the distinct impression that this was part of a series and I think I'll go hunt up the previous books before continuing on in the series. I loved "Midnight Man," and also liked the other two books in the Midnight series, so I was really happy to discover that "Midnight Vengeance" was available.....not that it's dramatically different from the others...We've met Morton (aka Jacko) and Lauren before. Morton works for John Huntington's security firm, and helps keep an eye on Lauren, who's a friend of John's wife. She's working hard at being invisible, since she's being hunted by a drug kingpin. But as the threat becomes unavoidable, Jacko steps in to serve as Lauren's bodyguard. Suddenly they're both caught up in a hot and steamy affair. So the story should be very familiar to Rice fans. Jacko is yet another of her hyper-protective and super-possessive heroes. But Jacko seems even more non-verbal and more unapproachable than Rice's usual...if that's possible. There's lots of his internal dialogue where he's convincing himself that Lauren couldn't/wouldn't/shouldn't get involved with him, but boom...suddenly they're together. Lauren is the typical strong-but-fragile heroine who needs protection. But there's lots (and lots and lots) of Lauren telling herself that someone as tough/sexy/hot/ as Jacko wouldn't be interested in her. And even if he is, she can't afford to take the risk...etc. So. Very formulaic, but somehow it still works...at least for me. And I'm already looking forward to the next one, where hopefully we'll learn more about Felicity.
