Le Bal Des Immortels (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

You still have your usual Ton and the ball gowns and the parties, even your stuck up Earls, Dukes and Lords - just in this case one of the Earls, Dukes and/or Lords might be vampire! This is another twist to the vampire stories and not all the usual myths are considered in this but some are (such as sunlight can burn, stake through the heart etc). One big change is not only do they have the usual sunlight/decapitation/stake through the heart but each vampire has it's own weakness against something. eg copper, emeralds, wine etc. I thought this was a refreshing twist on a classic and it also gave us a little insight to Voss' inner workings too.The book is made up of many different characters but the main pair is Voss (Lord Dewhurst) and Angelica Woodmore. There story is a great read and it reads just as if Voss was a devilish Rake that all the Mamas and Matrons tell their charges to stay away from - he just has an added reason that the charges should listen to those warning that the Mamas and Matrons don't know of!The books reads well and the story is a nice pace and written very well.4/5 for this book and I may just need to read some more of this author and I definitely will be reading number 2. My rating for this book is 3.5 stars. I thought that it started out a bit stilted and slow but at about midway it got really good. I finally started to form some attachment with the characters and then the book took off.Ms. Gleason's take on the vampires as disciples of Lucifer......gifted to be Dracule when he chooses them to accept his "gift" is interesting. The fact that they are driven to take from their victims or feel incredible pain was an interesting spin on the myth. I liked Angelica from the start but Voss really needed to grow on me. I wasn't sure in the end if he would be able to redeem himself enough to be worthy but thankfully he comes through. I honestly thought the sex would be a bit hotter in this book but I can live with the lack of not too much steam. This first book had a bit of world building to accomplish so I will cut it some slack though. I am definitely intrigued enough to continue with the series.
