Late For The Wedding (2004) - Plot & Excerpts

This is book 3 in the series starring Lavinia Lake and Tobias March. It picks up where book 2 left off...Tobias is falling hard for Lavinia, becomming more and more frustrated, trying all through the novel to find more private time with her, in this fast pased murder mystery. In true alpha male style, he is becomming even more protective of Lavinia, yet she thwarts him at every turn. He is unsure of his ability to provide financially for Lavinia, and she is a widow who has stated she will never marry again. This is a puzzel Tobias must weave his way through in order to win her over. In the meantime, she is waiting for Tobias to pop the question...They are a bit lacking in communication...However, at the end of book 2, they declared their love for each other, so it is only a matter of time. The mystery overshadows the romance/sex portion of this book, but it is so good you dont mind. Lots of witty dialog, funny moments between these two strong lovers, plus a developing relationship between Tobias' brother-in-law, Anthony, and Lavinia's neice,Emmiline make it even more fun. I think the title is because Tobias finally proposes on the last page. I would have like more romance between these two in this novel, but it was lots of fun and I will read it again in the future.

This was an enjoyable book with some unpredictable plot twists. B-.One of my favorite things about having finished this book is that I now know where I am in the series. I've read both previous books. As with much by Amanda Quick (a pen name for Jayne Krentz) they tiptoe along the line between fantasy and romance. This third had fewer fantastic elements than the previous two. This book is not part of my project to read 50 books by authors of color this year. As you may already be aware the overwhelming majority of romance novels published in the US are written by white women. Romance novels are the only form of erotica primarily produced and consumed by women. The only male writer I can think of whose romance work I've read is Bob Mayer. He's cowritten some books with famous romance writer Jennifer Crusie, and I've read both Agnes and the Hitman (which is hilarious, if you haven't already read it, I recommended it to my mom and now she laughs whenever I even mention the title) and Wild Ride which is about a haunted amusement park.

Amanda Quick’s specialty using this pen-name (she’s Jayne Krantz as well), is 1810-1820’s London mysteries. Unlike most books of their era it probably points to a more forward thinking, i.e. industrial revolution was coming and work class would have been impacted at that time. Mrs. Lake is a paragon for the modern women; she works at ‘discrete investigations’ with her sometimes partner Mr. March. The novels (series of three and this is the third and final of that series), has a definite Sherlock Holmes feel to it, with sharp clever assistants, access to the ton as well as the underbelly of London. This story is about a generational murderer called the memento moray man, who kills those in his estimation worthy of killing. Essentially he is a vigilante; it’s obviously generational where the memento’s left have covered murders over many decades. One of these men Mr. March had already caught in his past. Now he and Mrs. Lake join forces to find the latest. The characters are rich and wonderful, so British, so logical. Even the secondary characters which many are carried from book to book grow on you. Highly recommend this series, all three are gems in my estimation. If you can, try the audio book version, the voices are perfect.

This is the third Lake/March book by Amanda Quick. The two have realized their feelings for each other and must work to find time together. When they are invited to a house party, the$y believe that everything will be great. Lavinia finds a woman with her arms around Tobias, and becomes disgruntled. They witness a murder and are kicked out of the party. They come back to London on the hunt for a killer. Tobias’s past comes back to haunt him, and he tries to keep Lavinia out of the case. Anthony and Emeline have confronted the two on their future, and Anthony and Tobias are on the same page in regards to their relationships. They are confronted of all levels of society and solve their cases. Anthony and Emeline make it clear of their determination to marry and makes the older people understand what they really should do. This is a pretty good story and I only wish that there were more books with the two.
