Die Letzte Stunde (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

Genre: I'm not really sure what category this would fall into. I wouldn't classify it as a romance. There are touches of a love story, but it's bigger than that.Characters: Carrie--one of the Thompson sisters. The one who is like a mother to the others. Always looking out for them and helping everyone else. Ray--a soldier back from Afghanistan. The supporting characters--I was annoyed in Just Remember to Breathe by the Thompson parents. That was magnified in this novel. We get to see more of Alex and Dylan in this story, as well as the twins Jessica and Sarah. I cannot wait to find out why Andrea has fled the country; I'm expecting a good story there.Plot: There were SO many stories running simultaneously in this book. It was a bit hard to keep up, or rather, it was different from recent books I've been reading where you know what is going to happen and you can cruise through the story. I did NOT know what was coming in this one. Not in several of the story lines. First you have the current event--the car crash--and what is happening in the hospital. Second, Ray is flashing back to events in Afghanistan. Third, there is a trial surrounding the events there. Fourth, Carrie has a situation with her job. Fifth, there is an ongoing story about Carrie and Ray falling in love, which to me, did not take center stage in the book. Writing style: Alternating POVs. Alternating between current events and flashbacks. Somewhat wordy with descriptions, but not in a bad way. Just different from what I have been reading. I give props to Charles Sheehan-Miles; he has earned my respect as a writer.Overall: I cried. And continue to think about this story after it is finished. Worthy of five stars just for that. But this is a deep story, with insights into how people react in wartime, under stress, when faced with difficult decisions, when dealing with trauma. If I could I would give so many more stars... I am crying right now and I usually don't cry. This book - it was perfect. And I simply loved the ending, I loved Carrie so much and I loved Ray. I loved their bravery and I loved their weaknesses. And god, how I loved them taking care of each other. Best Book ever written and ever read. Although at one time Carrie seriously pissed me of - after the accident, when she didn't take care of herself. But somehow it made sense too, why she reacted like that, so I can forgive her for that... barely.
