Count The Monkeys (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Marc Barnett has made counting so much more fun with this book!!! The goal of this book is to count the monkeys, but other animals keep scaring the monkeys away. First a cobra scared the monkeys. Then two mongooses or is it mongeese, chased the cobra away. Along with counting the various animals, there are interactions drawing the children into the book. The author has the children zig zagging their arms, yelling at lumberjacks, and roaring at the bears, among many other things. Finally, the very last page is where all of the monkeys are hiding and there are a lot of them to count!!This is a wonderful book for Pre-K through second grade to learn numbers and counting. The illustrations are fun, comical, and compliment the text very well. The interactions just make this book all the more awesome to read to the children. A teacher could use this book for number recognition, counting, and listening skills. The teacher could make each child a book of numbers. Then the children could put monkey stickers on each page that would coordinate with each number. A teacher could have the children color a number worksheet that would have the characters of the book on it. This book is too much fun! It is perfect for teaching young readers how to count. They will want to hurry though the book to see what scared the group of monkeys on to the next page. Whether it be the king cobra, a group of bears or sweet old honeybee keepers, the young readers will have fun counting them all!The illustrations done by Kevin Cornell are brilliant! The bright colors and fun pictures will keep readers of all ages enthralled to see what the next will hold.
