Chaos Walking: A Trilogy (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

This is a really good set of books!Especially impressive is the use of fonts and variation of print to represent thoughts and voices, even on the book covers - very original and effective. The concept of some people and the creatures of the planet thinking out loud is also very creative and well done. The pace of the story, mostly narrated 1st person through the thoughts of a few main characters, is pretty slow. The downside is the pace moves kind of slow - not that much time passes and not many things happen altogether through the 3 books. The upside is very much unlike a Tom Clancy novel that is agonizing to put down once it gets rolling, these books are broken into bite sized chapters and easy to read at bed time without fear of staying up 2 hours too late. It's a little frustrating to have the main character be a youth who is full of emotion and always screwing everything up, but that's quite real to life and very relate-able, so this is a frustration that is not necessarily a negative. I did find it easier to get past this trait than being inside the head of Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games trilogy (which I also give 4 stars) with all her backtracking and self-doubt and emoting over everything over and over. I was told by some authorities that that is what it really sounds like in a girl's head, so get past it. Or in my case, learn how to skim quickly to the next place where I need to pay attention. In summary, really good books with a nice spectrum of characters, good character development, and lots of originality. This trilogy is like no other I've ever read. The plot twists are heart wrenching, and my family would catch me reading with a wan, shocked face as I read. I I would not recommend this book for elementary school readers. But as a middle school going into high school student, it helped me open my eyes to the real actuality of the nastiness humans are. In all, this trilogy was an excellent read, I highly suggest it.
