Candleman (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Theo Saint has been kept away from the public for his entire life. He drinks hot water, eats millet and greens, and is thin and pale and must ALWAYS wear gloves. The night two burglars break into Empire Hall is the night Theo discovers he has a terrible power: one touch of his bare hands makes people melt like wax. He doesn't know it yet, but he is the descendant of one of the most feared people in London's history: The Candle Man. And his guardians are not his friends: he must escape. Set in modern day society, this is an adventure-filled read with plenty of gruesome detail, cryptid-like creatures, and a really cool gargoyle. A very promising series that kids will enjoy. 5th grade and up. It was okay from the start. Then, it was great when Theo has finally escaped accidentally with the help of Chloe. But, this young boy is somehow telling me he's afraid still in the real world.I thought he's brave like Ethan Wate or Lucas Ross. Chloe is a strong female character(she even went down to the the evil Dr. Saint's network) ,but she's not the strong type of my liking compared to Bianca(Evernight) and Lena (Beautiful Creatures). While I read this book, the ending was not very interesting as there were few heroes to save the day. Magnus and his grandson, Sam, were just normal people. The antagonists were lacking "pure" evil. They should be acting like everything is alright. Mrs. Bethany(Evernight) and Lena's mom(Beautiful Creatures) showed an example of pure evilness just by looking nice and telling "kind" things in a "nice" tone. Dr. Saint's voice(in my head) was annoying like he's telling me he's evil at the start. Now, that's not fascinating. I guess I'm in for teenaged books compared to this one which seems like it's for children eventhough there are gruesome fights in this story. The fights were not giving me an "effect". A shocking one. Guess I won't be reading the next sequel.

What do You think about Candleman (2011)?

No swearing but very gruesome. A very unusual story and I am not sure I will read the next book.
