Barbary (1986) - Plot & Excerpts

Being that Dreamsnake is one of my favorite books, I decided I'd better pick up a few other things by the same author. Sometimes I'm afraid to do that -- I loved the one book so much, what if that was the best thing? What if everything else by her is wretched? HAH. Not to worry, because this was a good, fun read. It's a quick read, and although juvenile fiction I didn't feel that it was "beneath" me in any way. Perhaps because I know me, and know that if I'd read this about the first time I'd read Dreamsnake, I probably would have loved it just as much. I want to give a copy to my goddaughter for her 12th birthday. The cover is a little deceiving, in that it makes it look as if Barbary (actually 12) and Heather (the same age) are more in their twenties; but it does give you a good idea of what you're going to get in this book. Two strong-willed girls, a cat, and trouble in space. Who could ask for anything more?

This a a short, quick easy to read juvenile by sf pro Vonda McINtyre. It tells the story of Barbary, a foster child, who at age 12 is immigrating to a space station colony orbiting Earth.Barbary and Heather the main charactes are well developed and likeable; the story is adequate with a nice ending. It suffers from being a bit too short, with not enough "content" for an adult. However, those of you who have nieces or daughters who you are trying to turn on to Sf should pick this up if you can. They'll really enjoy it.Aimed more at a juvenile audience, but any adult Sf reader could read it in a few hours and find it a light, enjoyable tale--just the thing if you want some "lite" Sf.
