Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

This is a really good book and one of the better ones that I have read in a while for my end times shelf. This novel is actually a compilation of several smaller serial novels. I would recommend getting the book that has the whole enchilada in it. So the story is about a group of survivors of some future apocalyptic event that live in a large underground silo. They have something like a video feed of the outside and every now and then the sensors have to be cleaned. To be sent out as a cleaner however is like a death sentence. Now it may seem odd to have such a large book with this as the premise but trust me it works. The dynamics of the group of people in the silo and certain key figures really drive this story. As you progress you will learn more about the silo and some of the history of the before. I really enjoyed my time spent with this book and would be curious to see more from this author. I read the first short stand alone some time ago on a friends recommendation and was very intrigued, I loved his book, look forward to re-reading it and giving them as Christmas presents to all my friends. I literally could not put this down and finished it in record time, staying up way to late.Wool tells the story of survivors of some holocausts living in a 134 floor silo, no contact with the outside world that's been destroyed (like we're not seeing that coming :)) The only view to the outside world is through 2 cameras that reflect their view in a window at the top - this get's dirty and obscures the view, the simple solution is that law-breakers are send out into the toxic environment to clean the camera's and then take their chances in the "great outdoors". No-one makes it very far until Juilette discovers the reason for the suits failing, refuses to clean the camera lenses and takes off to discover several more silos.I felt the characters believable and utterly loved Solo - the only survivor of a shut-down in Silo 17 who manages to survive for 35 years with no other contact. The end was a little flat for me but have since finished Silo and it was a great follow / prequel to the story. What a fantastic imagination.

What do You think about Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) (2013)?

Wool Omnibus is the collection of the five novellas (and you have to read all five!) about a post-apocalyptic world where life is lived in a 100-story silo, with only a few windows to look out at the "real world." The windows need periodic cleaning, so criminals are suited up and sent outside to clean them, never allowed to return. This has happened without fail for hundreds of years, until that one person comes along who doesn't want to live by the same old rules. Just questioning the status quo is enough to have you marked as a "cleaner," but that's Juliette, our heroine. Hugh Howey has done it all: both the characters and the plot are well developed, the prose is excellent, the storyline is intriguing. Put it all together and you have a gripping story that will keep you turning the pages when you should be doing something else.

If you haven't read this book yet, put it at the top of your list. This is one of my favorite books of the last 10 years. Although it is sci-fi, the wonderful character and world development makes this a fascinating story even for those who usually avoid sci-fi like the plague. You truly care about these people, wonder how their world ever got like this, and wonder if we could be headed toward the same. READ IT.
