Welcome To Camp Nightmare (2003) - Plot & Excerpts

more concise. (January 2010) Billy has just been sent off to Camp Nightmoon by his mom and dad. While on the bus to camp, Billy encounters many characters, such as Mike, the fat kid who's scared of everything; Colin, who wears sunglasses and a red bandana around his long brown hair; Jay, the jockish kid with wild curly red hair and Dawn and Dori, two girls from the Girl Camp faction of Camp Nightmoon. The busdriver stops the vehicle in the middle of a desert on the way to the camp and orders everyone out of the bus. He unpacks everyone's belongings then drives off, abandoning the children in the desert. The children are suddenly surrounded by a group of creatures who prepare to slaughter the children until a man shows up on another bus with a rifle and shoots it at the creatures. The creatures run away in fear. The man who saved the children introduces himself as the leader of Camp Nightmoon, Uncle Al. Uncle Al invites the children onto his bus and drives approximately five minutes to the camp from where they were dropped off. Mike and Jay and Colin all bunk together, and while preparing their cabin, Mike finds a pair of poisonous snakes in his bed. Jay jokes around and play pushes Mike into the snakes. Mike is bitten on his hand, which then starts copiously bleeding. He runs off to find the nurse while Billy devises a plan to rid the snakes by wrapping them up in a bedsheet and throwing them outside. This plan is heralded as brave by their bunk's counselor, Larry, who then laughs when he is told that Mike went to find the nurse because there is no nurse. Mike returns and as his hand is described as bleeding profusely onto the floor of the cabin, Larry tells him to just wash his hand and wrap a bandage around it.The boys go to eat dinner around a campfire, where Uncle Al tells them the rules of Camp Nightmoon. The campers have to write home every day to tell their parents what fun they're having. They're not allowed out in the woods or along the river that runs between the boy's and girl's camps. This is peppered with a warning by Uncle Al that the woods are dangerous. Uncle Al also informs the campers that they're not allowed to ever enter the Forbidden Bunk. Jay decides after the fire that he wants to sneak out to see the Forbidden Bunk. Larry overhears him and tells him he probably shouldn't, as the Forbidden Bunk is where the Sabre lurks. Then the boys hear hideous howling from the Forbidden Bunk.

Welcome to Camp Nightmare as the title of the book says would be a kids worst nightmare. The people that you meet start disappearing, nobody will talk to you and then your camp director hands you a rifle and tells you that you have to hunt down two girls because they escaped into your camp. That is how Billy time at camp is going so far. The first day him and the other campers are almost attacked by some kind of wolf or cat monster. They were left stranded by one bus driver only to be picked up by the camps director along with some counselors. The first day there Mike is bitten by a snake and they find out there is no Nurse. That would have sent up the biggest red flag to me ever. No way to get treatment if you're hurt oh heck no. Mike disappears days later, then the boys start disappearing one by one. Two on a long hike, two on a canoe ride, even the girls at the other camp are going missing. The ending of this book was shocking and I gotta admit had me intrigued to know what was going to happen. I mean nobody would tell Billy anything when he asked what happened to his friends. He finally got the answers that he wanted though. Boy was I surprised at the ending, it was not at all what I expected. R.L. Stine once again had me believing one thing only to swing it to a one-eighty by the end.

Cross-posted at: http://mgbookreviews.wordpress.com/20...Camp Nightmare is a strange story, but it certainly delivers in terms of scariness. This Goosebumps stars Mike, a normal 12 year old heading off to an overnight camp for the first time. However, his trip seems cursed from the start as the bus that was supposed to take all the kids to camp drops them off in the middle of nowhere, leaving them to be attacked by strange, dog-like creatures. They are saved by the camp director, but it seems that the troubles with this camp are just beginning. One of Mike’s campmates is bitten by a snake, but the camp has no nurse to treat him, and he disappears overnight. Slowly, members of his cabin fall victim to mysterious accidents, but the camp staff don’t seem to care. Mike finally decides he has to stand up to this callousness when the camp director orders the campers to hunt through the forest with tranquilizer guns for two run-aways. With this choice, he finds out he passed the test that his parents were putting him through in order to take him along on a scientific expedition to an alien world: Earth! The idea that a camp could exist that is so careless towards the children that it is responsible for seems pretty unlikely, and as a reader, I was trying to figure out what the catch was from the very first few pages. However, with the twist reveal at the end, suddenly the callousness and neglect makes sense, even if the plot was a bit silly. Despite the ridiculous plot, Camp Nightmare is great for scaring younger readers. Camp can be a frightening experience at the best of times, and this story plays on those fears of abandonment and danger. Camp myths turn deadly, and Mike has no adults to turn to. He must survive on his own, and stand up against those who are supposed to be protecting him. All in all, this is one of my favourite books in the Goosebumps series.

Like all novellas in the Goosebumps series, this one provides a good quick shot of soft horror with about a hour of estimated reading time. The main bulk of this novella is really good in creating a nightmarish, paranoid atmosphere. However, while the series is often known for its last-page plot twists, this one has an ending which leaves a rather sour taste. Please read the next paragraph for the spoiler. It is revealed that the summer camp in reality was a test arranged by the protagonist's sci
