Waves Break My Fall (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE4 StarsFor a relatively short book this packs a punch.Kage is a marine who has just come off a tour of duty. Through his flashbacks and thoughts we learn it was not an easy tour and feeling unable to go directly home and face his family he heads to Mexico to decompress. His mental state is not that great at this point and he constantly has to remind himself that he is safe and no longer in a war zone. Day by day he relaxes a little more.He meets Zach at the start of his trip and the two men spend a lot of time together over the next few days. Zach is exactly what Kage needs, he seems immediately sensitive to Kage’s discomforts and never pushes for information. He allows Kage to feel ok in his skin without any pressure. As it turns out they live quite near to each other and plan to continue seeing each other when they return home.Once home they quickly entwine their lives and are living together within a few months. Kage has had to come out to his family, but it seems this wasn’t a secret anyway so that passes without any angst. The second part of this book is almost like reading about another couple as their lives unravel due to PTSD.As was the case initially Zach is extremely understanding and patient. Kage is almost crippled with the restrictions that his flashbacks incur both whilst asleep and awake. As the months pass by it seems there isn’t one part of their lives that it doesn’t affect. Zach’s strength and support seems never ending but when it becomes too dangerous Kage has to find the help he so desperately needs before he loses everything he wants and loves. I am really, really happy I found Kendall McKenna's books. Since that day I have fallen in love with all her stories. Now, since reading this one, I have none left. But because I know this author will be releasing books soon, I am happy. I really love this author and her books never fail to entertain me.This was hot and short. A marine meets a civilian and they make a connection while both are on holiday. It was nice seeing Kage adjust to returning from Afghanistan. Zach was so good for him in that sense. There was no pressure from him. It was just a gradual thing. An instant attraction that became an instant connection. This plot is not just sex and it's not just military. It has a great middle ground that this author always does so well. I love the fact she has manly men that have issues. It is refreshing to see our hero's with some confidence issues. It's also nice when they are not moaning about that type of thing constantly.I was happy with the length. It is shorter, but still a very good novella. But I can see where there would be room for another novella to follow on. But it works as a standalone.
