Väckelse (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I haven't read a King novel since 11/22/63 (which was brilliant), and except for the Dark Tower books, nothing before that since I threw Tom Gordon across the room. I find the later King straight-up horror books to be overwritten, indulgent, and poorly edited. And as usual, this book could easily lose 50 pages of self-indulgent adolescent prose. NONETHELESS, this is a scary and weird and sad book, compelling to read, full of the terror of the other side. And possibly, for those of us who have lost any faith that there is anything at all on the other side of life, horrific. I might have to start reading King novels again. I did not love Revival. I was expecting darkness but it didn't deliver. It was sold as pure horror but I never felt that throughout the book. I kept waiting for something horrific to happen. The set-up at the beginning of the story with little Jamie Morton was brilliant, but it went on for sometime and eventually just felt like a novel about a kid growing up in small town New England (I guess, I've never lived there). That's not a bad story... just wasn't what I was looking for in a King novel. As an aside, I loved Mr. Mercedes and because of it, convinced myself that King is embarking on some new things. I knew this wouldn't be anything like Mr. Mercedes but all the pre-release press smacked of horror and gore. That is where it didn't deliver. What was there is King's masterful way of setting the background. As with most of his novels, the characters, even those playing only a bit part, seemed so alive to me.
