The Wolf Who Hatched An Egg (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

3.5 stars. The Mate or Meal series by Scarlet Hyacinthis a unique twist in the paranormal shifter trope. Pair together two unlikely animals and see if they fall in love or kill each other! In The Wolf Who Hatched an Egg, the pairing is a werewolf and a swan.Shiloh is a shy, introverted swan shifter looking for true love. In the past, he’s had an idiot ex-boyfriend who abused him. Enter werewolf Liam. At first Liam doesn’t know if he can control his wolf urges and not eat the little swan, but the bond they share wins out. Just when they get together, a mysterious swan egg shows up and the two men must protect it, maybe even with their lives, to see that the baby is born. This installment in the series was utterly delightful. Imagine a wolf sitting on a swan egg waiting for it to hatch and you get the picture. Liam and Shiloh were wonderful together and complimented each other perfectly as mates. I also enjoyed seeing characters from book one and being introduced to new ones that will follow in the series.A fun, light read, just right for lazy summer days. However, I do recommend reading the series in order to get the full flavor.Dark Divas Reviews This second book in the series is as much fun as the first. Adding the complication of children, and how to deal with actually hatching an egg between a swan and a wolf is as hilarious as it sounds; except it also made me think about taking that a step further and applying it to humans. Then it becomes obvious that this is more of a fable – it is really talking about acceptance and dealing with differences between humans.Shiloh, the swan shifter, is a bit of an odd creature. Definitely at a loss for what to do, he ends up sleeping around in the hope of finding his mate. That may be an odd thing to do, but there are many people who do the same, and the ‘bird’ element in him makes it even more believable. His fear of making a mistake seems a little over the top, but once the egg is found he quickly refocuses. What I did like was his strength and pride, how he stood up for himself and the egg; not much of a ‘typical prey animal’ there!Liam, the wolf shifter, is strong, aggressive, and determined to make Shiloh see that they are meant to be together. The swan egg throws him for a loop – but not for long. I loved the way he kept trying to get closer to Shiloh and how he stands up to those who want to come between them. He may have made a couple of mistakes in the beginning, but he is clearly the right second parent for the little swan.If you like shifter stories with a difference, if two characters struggling to find a balance attract you and if you want to cheer on ‘two against the world’ (well with the help of a few friends), you will probably like this story.
