The Winning Hand (2002) - Plot & Excerpts

Darcy Wallace had run away from her quiet life in a small town in Kansas, to escape a powerful man who did not take no for an answer. Darcy was tired of fighting him, he has caused her to loose her job as a librarian and to be evicted from her apartment. She will not go back to him with a hanging head and marry him and be his obedient puppet for the rest of her life. And so she packed her few possessions in her old car, and left, just going in the direction her car was pointed at. Her bad luck continues when her purse is stolen, and her car breaks down just a mile outside of Las Vegas. She is hungry and tired and has only $ 9,31 left in her jeans pocket. Darcy has no plans at all, but she just leaves her car, and her suitcase in the boot, and takes the only important things she has with her: her tote bag with her notebooks and manuscripts. Walking in the desert heat is harder than she anticipated, but she just puts one foot in front of the other, vaguely wanting to stop for something to eat or drink but unable to do so. Until she actually reaches Las Vegas, the Strip. Her attention is caught by a huge statue of an Indian outside one of the big casino’s, the Comanche. Mesmerized by the chaos of people and sounds and lights, Darcy ventures inside, where a lot of people are playing slot machines. She doesn’t know anything about gambling, but how hard can it be? She could use her last few dollars for a meal, but one particular machine is calling to her. The Jackpot is $ 1.800.009,31 dollars, that has to be a sign, right? And so in a daze she feeds her last few dollars into the machine and pulls the handle. Upstairs, in the boss’ office, Robert MacGregor Blade is alerted to the strangely forlorn woman playing the Jackpot machine, and goes to check it out. With her last three dollars fed into the machine, Darcy pulls the handle again, watching in a daze as the stars and moons align in a pretty pattern, and the bells start ringing. She has no idea what is happening, but people are congratulating her, and then the statute of the Comanche warrior seems to come alive in front of her eyes, and she faints. Mac is just in time to catch her, she weighs almost nothing, and he takes her upstairs to one of the luxury suites reserved for high rollers. The small woman in his arms looks exhausted and like she has slept in her clothes for a few days. When Darcy comes to her senses again, she has no idea what has happened to her, and Mac explains it to her. She has won the Jackpot, she is now a very rich woman, even after taxes have been paid, and the press will want to talk to her. Darcy shies away from all the attention, she doesn’t want anyone alerted to her, and have her ex-fiancée find her again. She also has no clue what she should do with all that money, and she agrees with Mac’s suggestion, to just enjoy herself first. Get pampered in the resort’s spa, visit the shops and of course, gamble some more so he can win some back from her. Mac doesn’t really know what to do with this innocent from Kansas, she will be such an easy prey for all the con artists out there when they find out about her, he is determined to protect her as much as he can. He agrees to keep her name a secret for now, and he will arrange for his own uncle to act as her lawyer. Of course, when his parents get wind of what has happened, they will arrive at the Comanche immediately, and so does his grandfather, the famous MacGregor himself, when he gets a matchmaking idea in his head.I had such fun time reading this book, I enjoyed every minute of it. Darcy is such a bright character, she enjoys all the new things she is experiencing to the fullest, and I was right there with her. I absolutely loved her joy in the simple things, her innocence, her luck in gambling and how she held her own against Mac. I loved her interaction with his family, how she longed to be loved like they did each other. She grew into her own, finally free of the restrictions of her upbringing, and the expectations of others. She is compassionate, kindhearted and bright. She is a normal woman, not a supermodel, not some incredibly talented or smart woman, just an average person. I related to her, and rooted for her. She took a gamble with her heart, and when Mac pushed her away, for her own good ofcourse, she did not collapse. My only complaint was that she did not make him grovel enough in the end. This might very well be my favourite MacGregor book. It has been a while since a book was just so much fun to read, and I don’t mean over the top humor and snark, just pleasure.10 stars.© 2014 Reviews by Aurian

I had to say the plot of story is pretty interesting. Nice girl from Kansas winning the Jackpot and meeting a wealthy man who couldn't help but care about her.For a author/writer I think Darcy might've lacked quite a lot of life experience to be one. At first the book really captured my attention because of the way Darcy appeared so naive and sweet, paired with Mac, the Casino manager/owner, which gave me the impression of a unique match. But after a while she started continuously raging about how Mac thinks she's a bubble-brain and whatnot, made me realize she's actually a stubborn and quite hot tempered girl. I think I would've enjoyed the book more if Darcy stayed naive and sweet, trying to navigate her life in Vegas with nearly 2 million dollars, and have once-in-a-while wise outbursts to Mac instead of getting offended EVERYTIME he says something she doesn't agree with.Another thing about this story that really frustrated me was the ending. It was too quick and I feel like it happened in a flash. Darcy just had another outburst at Mac for getting the wrong idea of why his grandfather was talking to her, and then they make-up and decide to get married right away. The ending kind of left me hanging, made me wonder if this was it ? They met a few weeks ago and they've already decided they love eachother so much they need to get married ? ..okay ..unusual and not something that ever happen in real life. Although I am fully aware that this book is non-fictional and no girl would walk into a casino with less then $10 and win the jackpot, that part is the plotting of the story so I have no complaints about that being un-realistic. The main reason Darcy arrived in Vegas was because she wanted to escape the controlling Gerald. When he arrived and Darcy got rid of him with a couple of confident-filled sentences, again, progressed too fast. He was the whole reason Darcy is where she is now, and he was out of the story in like, what, a few pages ? That made me hope for a re-appearance of him so he'll cause a bigger conflict in the story instead of the rising action falling and rising and falling again.Aside from all the problems I had with the story, it was well written and I would probably read it again sometime in the future.

What do You think about The Winning Hand (2002)?

Orjinal Adı:The Winning Hand olan Utangaç Milyoner'in Goodreads Puanı 5/4,10 Benim puanım 5/5 Serinin en beğendiğim romanlarından idi.

Before The MacGregor Grooms, the oldest grandson of Daniel MacGregor had to get married, and, of course, Mac finds his true love in Nora Roberts' The Winning Hand, a Silhouette Special Edition romance novel.::: Back to Vegas We Go :::Robert MacGregor Blade, otherwise known as Mac Blade, is the oldest son of Serena and Justin Blade, owners of a chain of casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Mac is content with his life managing his parents' casino in Vegas, The Comanche, and having brief flings with locals and showgirls until Darcy Wallace shows up in the casino one night with less than ten dollars in her pocket. Darcy is fleeing a controlling ex-fiance, and not only did her car break down just outside of Vegas, but she also had her purse stolen. When she notices that a progressive slot machine has a payout ending with the exact same amount of money she has left to her name, she puts her last few dollars into the machine, and (true to the fairy tale ideal) wins the jackpot. Mac realizes that this shy Kansas librarian is totally out of her element, and decides to take her under his wing as she adjusts to her new life as a millionaire.Of course, no novel about a MacGregor would be complete without some involvement by the family patriarch, and once Daniel MacGregor meets Darcy, he decides that she is the perfect match for his grandson, and does everything he can to encourage a romance. The trouble is, Mac thinks that Darcy needs to experience more of the world, and that she doesn't belong in Vegas, much less as part of his life as a casino manager.::: Formulaic Entertainment :::Not a single plot point is unexpected in The Winning Hand, from Darcy winning the jackpot to the appearance in Las Vegas of her ex-fiance to the ending. Darcy is described as adorable and fairy-like, and of COURSE Mac's family falls in love with her and notices how lonely she seems to be. Of COURSE Mac falls in love with her too, and takes her for such cliche-ridden outings as a moonlit ride in the desert and a ride on a roller coaster at another casino. From the initial "coincidence" of the slot machine payoff ending in the same amount as Darcy has in her pocket, you know exactly how this story will end: poor little Midwestern girl makes good in Sin City.Still, this is Nora Roberts, and these are the MacGregors, and they are always fun. Roberts always takes care to make even her short romance novels fun to read and authentic, and the reader feels like they are right in the casino along with Darcy. I've never even been to Vegas, only lived vicariously through family and friends, and yet I still felt like I'd been there and seen what Darcy sees. The appearance of Mac's grandfather, the MacGregor, is always enjoyable, and he's in rare form in The Winning Hand, not only harrassing his grandson about marriage at every turn, but also taking over as Darcy's financial advisor, and chewing every scene Roberts writes him into. The Winning Hand may not be the meatiest Nora Roberts book ever written, but it's fun and enjoyable, and it's always nice to go back and spend time with a family that she's written about in so many of her novels. This review previously published at Epinions: http://www.epinions.com/review/Winnin...

We all live ordinary lives. We wake up in the morning, we go to work/school/whatever, we work our asses off, we come home, we watch a little tv, maybe hang out with some friends or cuddle with our significant other and we go to sleep. And then we dream. We dream of being rich, being famous, being a trendsetter, winning the lottery. Yes, we ALL want to be that girl, the one who hit the jackpot! "I think I saw a puddy-cat!"The one with a ticket to instant fame and wealth. "Buying my way to a better dress sense!"The one who's every man's sexy girl-next-door fantasy... Finally... JACKPOT!!!!The Winning Hand cashes in on all of our deepest fantasies of instant wealth and a hot guy to love. Darcy Wallace is literally down to her last dollar when she hits The Comanche on the Las Vegas Strip. She's punchy from walking in the desert sun with no food, water or rest. So when she hits the $2 million jackpot on the slot machine, all she can do is faint into sexy Robert MacGregor Blade's willing arms. Mac is the ultimate gambler, but he has met his match in this fairy-like, naive looking Kansas girl on the lucky streak of a lifetime. He feels an urge to protect the innocent, overwhelmed Darcy from the wolves already baying at the door for her newfound wealth. Darcy, for her part, is alone and friendless in a strange town and is only too happy to trust her instincts and put her faith in Mac and his charming family. The MacGregors has got to be my mostest favoritest romance series of all time. The family saga, spanning three generations and ten books, is heartwarming and charming. Read objectively, The Winning Hand is pretty awful in parts, especially the bits where Mac takes on a decidedly paternalistic air and tries to dictate what is best for Darcy; thankfully, despite being one of Nora's more submissive heroines, Darcy isn't a total wimp and manages to retain her own personality throughout. But the real charm of this story, for me, is its fairytale aspect. First you have the sheltered princess who runs away from the evil ogre. Then she wins a ton of money so she can ensure her continued liberation. Wish-fulfillment fantasy Number 1Then she meets Prince Charming, who shelters her in his castle. When the ogre comes to take the princess away, they face him down together. Then the prince and the princess fall in love. Wish-fulfillment fantasy Number 2There are some minor hurdles to cross on the path to true love, but eventually, the prince and the princess kiss and make up... Whoops! That's not quite the kind of kissing I was looking for!and live happily ever after! Wish-fulfillment fantasy Number 3 to 1 million...THE ENDNothing But Nora Week, Book 4
