The Tattered Banner (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

First off, hooray goodreads for having the wrong maximum amount of pages that the book actually had cause part one was up to the amount goodreads has. Finished the first part of the book but deciding to put it down. The punctuation annoyed me to no end, (why did everyone have to shout everything?) and everything seemed to be a long semtence at times. Things seemed to be written too wordy in places I felt wasnt needed, then not enough wording for other important parts. I felt the action sequences should have been more descriptive than they were. Too much was also thrown in. Magic, assassination, pointless romance that felt very thrown in, college life, etc. The narration follows Soren's transition into the Academy, getting used to his training with swords, making friends...then he is whisked away and asked to assassinate someone??? I found this book on BookHub and, while some parts were entertaining and I did enjoy it, there's just too much that makes me not enjoy this book any longer. Off to a really good start. An endearing character, training to develop his innate talent with the usual pitfalls, a few adventures and missteps. Then the end falls apart. I can't decide why because there will be another book so why the rush to the conclusion? I'd love to be able to give this four stars and definitely would have with a bit more interpersonal relationship building an a less hurried conclusion. Still, an enjoyable read overall and my official rating is 3.5.
