The Saint Valentine's Day Murders (1992) - Plot & Excerpts

Robert Amiss, a civil servant, has been seconded to the British Conservation Corporation for a year. He is not happy about it but doesn’t feel he has any choice in the matter and prepares himself for a year of boredom. Gradually he does come to like a few of his staff even the practical joker, Tiny. But then, more than half way through his secondment boxes of chocolates are sent to the wives of his colleagues for St Valentine’s Day. The chocolates are poisoned and the result is several deaths. Robert finds himself helping Superintendent Jim Milton with his enquiries once again.I though the author brought the office background to life and I could imagine working in the office she describes with those characters. Robert’s colleagues are far from being caricatures and it was interesting to see their lives unfolding as the mystery deepened. I thought the plot was well done as was Robert’s feelings of guilt about the deaths. I thought the ending was tense and well written as was the rest of the story. The books in this interesting series can be read in any order but they are better read in the order they were published because then the reader can see how the series characters are introduced. The series starts with ‘The Corridors of Death’.
