The Reef (1999) - Plot & Excerpts

This was a really nice read by Nora Roberts. All of the ocean imagery was done really well on Roberts's part. The details of the ocean life and diving really made me feel like I was a bystander on the boat watching the characters dive for treasure. Nora Roberts, in my opinion, has never had problems immersing the readers in her stories, fully committing to what the characters do. Now I don't know how a professional diver would feel reading this book, but for an unprofessional like myself (actually for someone who only makes it to the beach once every few years) Roberts did a great job with this aspect. The Beaumonts and the Lassiters team up one summer to hunt for buried treasure beneath the surface of the water. Those few months at sea and the events that result change the lives of everyone involved. For Tate Beaumont, a nineteen year old college student studying Mareing Archaeology, it's the summer she falls in love for the first time. For Matthew Lassiter, meeting the red-headed Tate changes his seemingly bad luck. They form a bond. When a greedy privateer comes along and claims their treasure for his own, all the summer's prospects seems weak and the familys go their separate ways. But the fire for the find never dies out.As in usual Nora style the book is separated into sections. In this case it's Past, Present, and Future. Very easy to see where certain events occur. This book is also one where Roberts shows us young love / heartbreak and finding the love again when you grow up. She does this intermittantly as a story device in other books. The book I've read recently where she does this (but was actually published after "The Reef") was Black Hills. I liked the way the story flowed in "The Reef" better. One of my complaints with "Black Hills" was the fact that we didn't get to see where the main characters relationship broke off and therefore the time needed for the characters to heal wasn't as understandable. With "The Reef" we get a good third of the book dedicated to the first grown affections between our main characters, and we get to see the moment that hearts break. I felt the build up of trust so much more later in the book than I would have if the earlier moments were cut down. I appreciate it. What I didn't like (that consequentially Roberts did better in Black Hills) was the back and forth between that main characters. They knew how they felt for one another but didn't want to be hurt again. Whereas in Black Hills, even though the characters were weary of getting back together there was no "well, if you can't make up your mind now then we're done" kind of ultimatum. I guess that's what keeps this story device from getting old, having differences based on the couples involved. The suspense part of the story was written really well. We knew who the villain was right from the start so it was more a matter of what they would do next rather than figuring out who was committing that crimes as in some of her stories. I really did feel the threat of our villain in this one too. A truly unhinged individual can be quite dangerous especially if they don't even know what their next move might be.I'll admit, while I was reading I could have thought that I had the upcoming events pegged. But Nora Robert turned out to throw in a few twists that genuinlly surprised me. So I have to give her credit for that. If for nothing else, this book allowed me to escape reality for a few hours throughout a couple of days which is why I read Nora Roberts in the first place. It's very easy to get lost in the story. Can't wait to read another one! Until Then!

What do You think about The Reef (1999)?

One of the best parts about traveling for me it picking a book to take along. This time around we went to Hawaii, and I was looking for something good to lounge with on the beach. The Reef was it - a perfect beach read. It is a story set in the Pacific, entwined with murder, greed, passion, piracy, a nasty bad guy, cursed amulets, and romance. All of the elements which make for good vacation reading. Tate Beaumont is a marine biologist with a passion for treasure hunting. She and her family form an alliance with Buck and Matthew Lassiter in the hopes of finding Angelique's Curse - a jeweled amulet with a dark past. Filled with suspense and twists, and descriptions I could get lost in, this book impressed me. It is the first time I've read Nora Roberts, and I'm thinking it won't be the last.

Don't let the number of stars I gave this book full you - it was certainly a good story and I would recommend it to any Nora Roberts fan. This is the second of NR's earlier novels that I've read recentley, and I have to admit, I find them a bit refreshing compared to some of the books she is putting out now - same plotline, same couple, different name...you know what I am saying if you have read more than one of her books. That's not to say that I don't enjoy her current works, I do, very much. It's just that you can tell she was still experimenting with her style in this book - and I appreciated that. You know who the bad guy is from the beginning, and I appreciate knowing his motivation for his crimes...it's also fun to see how the bad guy is plotting against the hero's during the story...that way at the end I'm not left scratching my head like I have been with quite a number of NR books. All the characters are quite likeable in this story - I especially enjoyed the interaction between Tate's parents and the Lassiters. The setting was fun and I enjoyed the ride.
