The Oversight (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

Kind of hard to give this story an honest review as it's book 1, the story is not complete. It was compelling at times, rambling at other times. Seems like this might be a book that would do well with the young adult audience. It was fun having a supernatural (supranatural) story combined with a period piece, it seems like those are usually more modern tales now-a-days. This is a unique story so if you're looking for something different, this might satisfy your craving. I would almost rather wait until the whole series is out and read them all together. I definitely would like to read the next book to see where this goes. This review is based on a free e-edition from NetGalley.com. To be honest, this book took quite awhile for me to get into. I repeatedly wondered if I cared about any of the characters. The changed of POV from what I had been reading recently was also a bit jarring, and I found myself wondering if I would have enjoyed a 1st person perspective better; I would then at least know the characters better. BUT, by the end I was entranced. I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Oversight' in a way I had not seen coming. The world building was very well done, very informative without info dumping, and very creative. I never felt that I didn't understand what was going on and was able to internalize and accept the rules laid down by the author in his new world. The characters took awhile to grow on me, as mentioned above, but once they did I felt strongly for them and feel a great desire to know them better. I want to read the next book to spend more time with the characters more than to know what is going to happen next, which is saying quite a lot more me. The plot is complex without feeling like it has bitten off more than it can chew and it makes the reader feel intelligent for following along. The writing is skilled and mature and is a pleasure to read and the descriptions are very nuanced. There was a lot of showing and not just telling, which makes for a very enjoyable adventure. There is no main character, which I think took some adjusting for me; everyone is just as important to the plot as the next person and it all connects together in some way. Lucy took awhile to grow on me, but by the end I felt that she had grown a lot and I felt proud of her, I am desperate for the much needed communication between Sarah Falk and Mr. Sharp, and Cook is my favourite. I even feel strongly about Jed the dog and the Raven.I felt the book is quite original, out of the books I have read, which I appreciated and I am sad that I have to wait so long to read the next instalment. A great book that I would highly recommend to people who like this genre.

What do You think about The Oversight (2014)?

Amazing and it will be long long long wait until May next year for the next book to be released.

Couldn't get into this, too slow and so much descriptive background. Didn't finish, I gave up.

I'm really looking forward to the next one. I like the Smith a lot.
