The Guns At Last Night: The War In Western Europe 1944-1945 (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Rick Atkinson has written a superb book as his third and final History of World war II. In this book, Atkinson comes into his full power as an author. His style, the depth at which he looks at issues and his skill at assessing the forces at work within these events, and the decisions being brought about by them, makes this one of the best histories I have read about the war. I strongly urge anyone seeking to understand the forces at work today, in this the beginning of the 21st century,to read "The Guns at Last Light." Atkinson will hold your interest and trigger your thinking as you journey with him in these final years of this horrific conflict. This is a powerful, highly emotive book, almost a day by day account of the last year of World War II. Many of the people involved, both great and unknown, are brought to life by extraordinary research including personal letters. I would suggest that this trilogy (this being the last volume) should be read in conjunction with Albert Speer's "Inside the Third Reich" which is an equally powerful book indicating the rise of the Nazi horror of which Speer was a major player. Atkinson's trilogy is an experience that will stay with the reader for a very long time.
