The Getaway Car: A Practical Memoir About Writing And Life (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

When I found this short memoir by Ann Patchett, author of ‘State of Wonder’ and ‘The Patron Saint of Liars’on iBooks, of course I had to download it. It's an entertaining and educational description of Patchett's personal path to becoming a famed writer. She prompts us to put in the time because there are no short-cuts and shows how writing is at the same time miserable and the best thing in the world. Loved it! I haven't actually read any of this author's books yet but I do have both Bel Canto and Patron Saint on my bookshelf. And now that I've read her views on writing maybe that will be enough to get me around to them. Either way I absolutely Loved this short book about writing, the love and hate of it, and this authors process and 'advice' if you really want to call it that. What I liked was that the book felt like a cozy conversation held by two friends in front of a fireplace. It wasn't preachy like some books about writing can be nor was it full of exercises. It was simply just a conversation and insight into one writers method and her backstory, all of which was interesting and engaging. I honestly would have loved it to be longer, I could have kept reading and reading bit that's also sort of her point, now it's time to get myself writing and I really feel that this book has helped push me further in that direction than anything else I've read in a while. (This book is the first since Stephen King's On Writing that has made me feel more ready than anything else to go ahead and just get writing!)

Quick read. Inspirational for aspiring writers, and not too heavy or dense with advice.
