The Boys, Volume 11: Over The Hills With The Swords Of A Thousand Men (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

A good climax to the story's major arc — other than the fact that the last issue has way too much telling rather than showing, dropping in an exposition dump rather than providing a more dramatic solution for some of the comic's main mysteries. Despite that, this volume has everything that's made the Boys good: action, adventure, brutality, inappropriateness, and emotions. It also manages to avoid most of what made The Boys bad. Now I'm feeling hopeful but worried. After the substantial character exploration in "Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker," the penultimate volume of this saga again relies on the less substantial aspects of this series."The Boys" is a clever mix of concepts. Extremely satirical, politically incorrect, male and outrageous, it still manages to be all of these things with an astounding amount of self irony and indirect commentary. It also works as a sharp political allegory and a contemplative character story from time to time.In "Over the Hill with the Swords of a Thousand Men" we're very much on the outrageous satire department again, and the volume balances itself between being shocking and offering aggressive hubris to the reader. In the previous volume we finally learned the reasons behind Butcher's vendetta. Now that vendetta is turning into actions, and I'm not sure weather we're invited to root for the huntIt certainly seems like that at this point, but I still have some hope that Ennis's brutal but strong humanism might save this series from sinking in the final leg.
