Vonnegut,Kozinski,Christopher Moore and now Chuck Pahlaniuk have tapped the black humour of all the mainstream sacred cows, with stylish grace and the prescient ablity to extrapolate the consequences of our most innocuous acts.Another commonality: they all have the uncanny ability to transform our feelings for their ungainly, unlikely,unlikable, sometimes even rather repulsive oddball freak heroes from clinicly detached to warm and fuzzy. Quite a class act.We may not like them, but they are us. No matter that we are not flitting about in our private jet nor yet hijakking someone elses flight,not slogging through dense undergrowth or along remote mountain passes, we can see the logic in the exteme actions of the characters, and can easily place ourselves in the action.If you can get past the truly awful bits at the beginning and want to know anything more about a powertripping,manipulative, emotionally stunted slob, you may read on to reluctantly accept that this is an apt archetype for the kind of people the system (church,state, and economic)are churning out. CP has brilliantly exposed the paradoxes of power and the vacuum in the soul of American culture. CP's irony is consistently in your face but he can also be subtle. His trick of pagination starting at the beginning of the end with the countdown to zero, was not something GR could handle. My reading graph for this book is hilarious. But how fitting the metaphor for societies negative progress.The Irony of Names...First, the irony of Tender being the generic name for boys brought up to obey without question,the authority and the rules instilled in them by their elers.This entailed suppression of all the qualities, compassion, emotional depth and sensitivity to ones own as well as primarily the feelings of others,that most prominently define the origianl meaning of the word. That Our Hero continues to use this name, almost as a pseudonum,even when discarding his uniform of faith, confirms his passive/accepting character. He is lost without instructions, yet he feeds on praise and goes through severe withdrawel when deprived of his audience.That our unflappable heroine, the plucky and prescient Fertility Hollis, believes that she is sterile,gives her the protection she requires for the most distressing aspect of her job as a surrogate mother, the possibility of actually having to conceive and carry off a pregnancy. I think CP is rubbing it in here with his imagry of a depraved and barren aspect of the abundancy that surrounds us, always hungry for more. I found it rather chilling that Fertility acheived her blase attitude to the disasters she predicted by accepting the fact that it was useless to warn people because not only would they not believe her, they would question her ability.It is interesting to note the wide variety of responses posted for this book on GR.I can see that some people might get bogged down in being offended. I thought it was great reading and a wickedly accurate assessment of the situation here as it is evolving.There are also scattered about this terrific, provocative book some really basic and practical helpful hints for stain removal and basic houshold micro management.
What started out as a promising read quickly spiraled into a flaming wreck, similar to the plane crash that we're guaranteed on the first page. Or is it the last page? The book and chapters are numbered in reverse order, as some kind of clever gimmick so that you open at the end of the story, and count down the pages until you finally reach the beginning. The concept is intriguing, and might work better if the story was structured around it(think: the film "Memento") but here, it feels pretentious.Survivor ultimately fails for me at the 50 yard line, when the story jumps the shark as Palahniuk transforms the already unsympathetic lead character from Tender Branson cult missionary into Tender Branson media messiah.The book itself felt hijacked by Palahniuk's socio-politcal statements. Admitadly, a deeply entrenched op/ed is to be expected from him, but his commentary on cults and religion loses all significance as the tale switches gears into attacking big pharma, corporate religion, and merchandising agents.It's almost as if Palahniuk can't decide what he wants to say, so he uses the scattershot approach to take a jab at everything, and thus lessens the impact of any *one* thing. Even more bothersome is where the story gets choked either failing to adequately explain the motivations of characters (like Fetility) or in unbelievable plot points like when Tender, now an (in)famous international star, drops off the grid with a simple change of hair color, yet manages to surround himself with religious/charity types (hiding out at the Ronald McDonald House) and no one recognizes him! The biggest drawback has to be the lack of character development for every person in the book. It appears as though no one learns anything on their journey as each character exits the plot the way they entered: Fertility has no remorse for her scam job, Tender is a spineless blank slate waiting for someone to tell him what to do. The one character that dares grow suffers a deus ex machina death. Adam, Tender's "evil" twin brother shows up out of the blue for the sole purpose of... being killed in a really ridiculous way? I get that it's supposed to be a joke, but I'm not laughing. In fact, I kept waiting for most of the end of the book to be a dream sequence, or a bad LSD trip to "the bridge at Owl Creek," that's how far from reality the reader is driven.Ultimately, Survivor left me asking myself why I bothered to read the book in the first place something I'll definately consider before approaching his next work.

الفكرة رائعة والتسلسل يمضي بك مشوقا ومبهرا ولكن.. تشاك هذه المرة لم يكن في أوجه. لقد أصر على المضي قدما في تسطير أسلوبه الروائي الذي قدمه في نادي القتال محاولا هذه المرة اللعب على وتيرة مختلفة وأحداث أخرى ولكن الأمر مازل يتشابه علي. نفس عناصره يعيد تطويعها بطريقته المعتادة في السرد. تفاصيل السرقة وتنظيف المنزل والعناية بالورود مازلت تشبه تفاصيل كيفية تصنيع الصابون والمفرقعات والتجول بين عوالم حلقات العلاج. الشخصية النسائية تظهر أيضا بصورة مركبة وتتشابه مع تركيبة مارلا بطلة رواية نادي القتال مع أختلاف الحالة والتفاصيل. من الواضح أن تشاك نفسه يعشق أسلوبه هذا ويحاول تقديمه المرة تلو الأخرى مع تغيير الأحداث والشخصيات والتداخلات النفسية.. أنه بارع بحق في تناول هذا.. ولكنه يبقى محصورا داخل الأسلوب وليس القصة نفسها... تشاك ضد تشاك.الفكرة أكثر من رائعة ولعبة أدب الفحولة والقصص الطازجة النابعة من عالم الواقع الذي نعيشه هي بحق علامات مميزة لبالانيك ككاتب أثر في الأدب المعاصر وتأثر به جيل كامل من الكتاب حتى في الوطن العربي نفسه.أثر تشاك بالانيك ستراه واضحا في طريقة السرد التي يتبعها كتاب هم الأكثر مبيعا في الوطن العربي ومنهم أحمد خالد توفيق وأحمد مراد وأخرون بالعشرات.هذه الرواية كانت رائعة في تناول البعد الديني والنفسي وحتى لعبة الشهرة ولكنها بقيت عاجزة عن الخروج من عوالم نادي القتال مما جعلني في أحوال كثيرة أشعر بأني أطالع سلسلة من عدة أجزاء. ربما كان بالانيك محقا في تمسكه بأسلوبه الذي حقق به نجاح مهولا وربما لا.. يبقى الحكم للقارئ في النهاية.لا أحد يستطيع أن ينكر أن بالانيك قد حفر أسمه كمؤسس لأدب الفحولة بفرداته النفسية وعناصر التشويق وسرد المعلومات العجائبية وإستخدام الأحداث في العدو نحو قفزات صادمة في القصة.ولكن يبقى السؤال: لماذا يحاول الكتاب الشباب العرب تقليد أسلوبه فقط وكأنه ديكور ما دون الإجتهاد في البحث عن أفكار طازجة وقوية؟

كابوس مكتمل الأركان! تشاك بالانيك يفك أزرار بنطلونه، يخرج قضيبه، ويطرطر على المجتمع الذى فقد كل خصائصه وتحول لطبقات لا تنتهى من الزيف ثم الزيف ولا شئ إلا الزيف على جميع الأصعدة بلا استثناء.. لأجل هذا انفجرت ثورة تايلر دوردن فى نادى القتال..الرواية بصدد التحول لفيلم سنيمائى يتولى إخراجه فرانسيس لورانس (مخرج الجزء الثانى من ألعاب الجوع) وهو ظلم فادح لأن الرواية لا يصلح لها إلا ديفيد فينشر بما أنتجه التعاون السابق بينه وبين بالانيك فى نادى القتالكل كلمات الشكر لا تفى هشام فهمى حقه، سواء لاختياره للرواية، أو لحفاظه على الروح العامة العبثية الهازئة القاسية والنكهة المحلية المميزة لأدب بالانيك..

" هي رحلة مضطربة هائجة عن تقلبات الشهرة وطبيعة الإيمان " ...هكذا قالوا عن الرواية...هي رحلة تبدأ من نقطة الصفر من قبل أحد آخر أفراد طائفة دينية.. الرحلة الانتحارية على متن طائرة ركاب متجهة نحو غياهب الصحراء الاسترالية..أما عن مدى إضطراب الرواية فحدث ولا حرج كأنك تقرأ على الرواية على لوحٍ خشبي في وسط البحر،، الكرديشي المجنون (الناجي الأخير) الذي تتحول حياته من طفل منبوذ الى خادم في منزل ثري ثم مستشار نفسي الى قائد ديني تتصدر كتبه قائمة المبيعات بتلك الادعية الغريبة ..التفاصيل تغلب على الرواية دون الاحداث.. تفاصيل، تفاصيل ،سرد ،تفاصيل يقود نحو الجنون.. تفاصيل عن أي شئ يتخيله العقل وما بعد العقل..النقطة البارزة في الرواية هي التحدث عن الجماعات الدينية الغريبة وطبيعة الايمان فيها وغرابة البشر في إختراع طرق للأيمان والعادات والتقاليد المصاحبة لها..النقطة الثانية عن عزلة الانسان في بيئة تمارس تقاليد معينة ثم إنتقاله الى صخب الحياة في المدن..الثالثة عن الشهرة،، الصعود نحو الى القمة ثم الهبوط نحو أسفل سافلين..الرواية مجنونة هائجة بكل حذافيرها تضيع القارئ في متاهات التفاصيل وطرق السرد الملتوية..~* ملاحظة *~" عزيزي القارئ إذا أردت الحفاظ على سلامة عقلك فلا تقترب من هذه الرواية ،،رجاء "
