Stick Man (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

This book tells the story of Stick Man and the troublesome adventure he experiences after going for a jog. One morning he leaves his stick lady love and his three children in the family tree. On the way, he meets an excited dog who wants to play with him and use poor Stick Man for his favourite trick. When he finally escapes the dog, a girl picks him up and throws him into the water. A swan then swims along and uses Stick Man to make part of her nest. He later gets away and ends up getting washed up on a beach where he is used as a flag mast and a cricket bat.Throughout the story, Stick Man tries to explain to everyone that he is not just a standard stick and that he has feelings but unfortunately nobody can hear him. The story has a seasonal theme and Stick Man ends up meeting Santa when he gets stuck in a chimney. He helps him deliver presents at Christmas time before returning to his family tree. This would be a fantastic story to read aloud to a KS1 class. I think that children would find the story funny and interesting and the use of rhyme and repetition would allow them to join in. Every sentence is accompanied by a detailed illustration and this makes the book appealing to early readers. I would definitely use this book in a future lesson. I loved reading this book to my reception class they were totally engrossed within the story. I also enjoyed the story which nearly brought a tear to my eye!!Donaldson's picture book tells the story of Stick Man and the troublesome adventure he experiences after beginning a jog. On this adventure, he wants nothing other than to return home to his family. However, Stick Man fails to receive this wish. From being a mast on a sand castle to being an arm on a snow man, Stick Man accepts that he may never return home. In a surprising twist, Stick Man is returned home by Santa just in time for Christmas. This story is interesting for children because it helps children to realise that you can use your imagination for objects and something never has only one idea. The rhyming scheme allows children to join in with the story which makes in more enjoyable for them. This picture book would be suitable for Early Years in the lead up to christmas as the illustrations introduce a magical christmas atmosphere. It could also be used in science for children to understand the different seasons.

Love the Stick Man. He has quite a few spin-offs, too: board books and such like. Great stuff.
