Starlighter (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

This is an interesting read. Not Bryan Davis's best work, but it was enjoyable. The synopsis is pretty misleading; the two "main" characters of the book don't even really meet until over 300 pages into it.The book starts by switching P.O.V's at the beginning of each chapter. The problem with this is that the chapters are too long. If you find one of the characters boring, then you have a lot of reading to muddle through until the P.O.V changes. The characters are interesting enough, but there seems to be too many. A smaller cast (as the synopsis implies) would have been better, I think.I like Bryan Davis's writing, but it can be very confusing, and I'm not just talking about plot, but the actual prose; the way he describes things is sometimes very unclear and hard to grasp. His characters in this book seem more like children than young adults, but the action and things seem more graphic than you would want in a children's book, so it's kind of perplexing who the intended audience of this book was.All in all, if you like Dragons and portals and swords and all things epic fantasy, you'll like this book. If you're not as much into that genre, you might still like this book. Interesting idea. But I can tell this is a book in a series because there are so many questions that are left unanswered. I feel like I am missing a prologue for this book, but I guess I just need to read book two to find out. Guess I was in a mood for a whole complete story with an optional book two to further the adventure. Dragons, sword fights, but a mix of science (yes science, not magic)to bring you into a place between worlds, Starlight the Dragon Planet, and the Fourth Major the human planet. You have legends between both worlds, human enslavement under Dragon control on Starlight and a government keeping dragons as a myth on Fourth Major. Other than some confusion on how the science all played a part in this universe, I have to say that this book was a fun read, but only if you are looking for a series to get into. But it's got me hooked. If you want an interesting story involving our favorite fire breathing reptiles than by all means pick this book up.
