Sins Of The Highlander (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

If I were to be really honest Sins of the Highlander fell flat for me. I’m not sure if it’s because I went in with high expectations or because I’ve been reading too many highlander books, but I felt like I was waiting for something to happen to capture my attention….but it turned out I was waiting in vain. The story follows the plot of many highlander novels. The Laird steals the bride-to-be of his enemy for revenge of what happened to his past wife, the offended parties then set to rescue the bride but along the way the two fall-in love and the bride no longer wants to escape. At the end the Laird fights for the right to keep his new bride and he no longer seeks revenge and they live happily ever after. This isn’t all that happens - there’s a wolf attack, a witch trial and near death chases - but even with all this I still couldn’t evoke a raving response. I think the main problem I had was with the connection between the characters and me. I couldn’t connect with the heroine, Elspeth Stewart. She came across naïve and just annoying actually. Also by the end of the book, I didn’t feel like I knew Rob any more than I did at the beginning. We don’t get into his head and feelings – which would have strengthened his character. Their chemistry didn’t really do it for me either and I found myself rolling my eyes at places. Ultimately I had a hard time finishing this book.I swear I didn’t hate on everything. I found Rob’s kilt wearing to be incredibly sexy. Who can resist really? Not me for sure. And I liked the supernatural aspect of Elspeth having a ‘gift’ of foresight, although I would have loved to have that explored a little more; it was pretty cool. I have read raving reviews that have loved this book but I’m apparently not one of them. And that’s fine. I would encourage you to give this one a go because what may have been repetitive and slow for me may be the opposite for you! If you’re a fan of Scottish romance this may be one for you. It just wasn’t for me apparently. Rating: 2.5/5
