Se Vuoi Vedere Una Balena (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

If you want to see a whale is a story about a young boy who patiently waits to see a whale. The little boy explains everything you need to do in order to see the whale. The little boy also explains everything you can’t do if you want to see the whale. After making sure the little boy does everything correctly to get the best chance at seeing the whale, he waits. The boy patiently waits, and waits, and waits, until he finally sees the whale. This story teaches young children about patience. It teaches that if you want something, you have to do all the right things that lead up to that event and then wait patiently until it comes. It teaches children that good things come to those who wait. Although there is text, the story could be a wordless picture book. The reader would be able to tell the same exact story from looking at the picture as reading the text. This book would be a good book to read to students to teach them about patience. Younger students may not get the moral of the story until after the book is over. The book, If You Want to See a Whale, tells the story of curiosity and patience. The story is about a little boy and his dog on the search for seeing a whale. The story is rather a simple and has very basic and simple illustrations that support the text. The illustrations are done in pencil and crayons. I like that Erin E. Stead, the illustrator, used child appropriate supplies to make his illustrations. These supplies create an engaging illustration that captures the child’s imagination. I feel this is a good component to have a in a children book. You want the reader to make a connection to the story and I feel Fogliano sets up her reader for this experience. Something I also enjoy about this book is the general size of the book. It is great size for young children to hold and read. I would mostly like have this book in my classroom library because it’s a great animal book and I like its message about curiosity. Also it talks about patience, if you have ever been whale watching you know that patience is a big component. I might even use this book to introduce examples of patience and read the book right before a whale watching fieldtrip.
