Scorpion Mountain (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I really can't add any more to what all the other reviewers wrote. I simply add my personal two thumbs way up. I love Flannagan's books--they make me feel like a kid again, daydreaming about finding a place on the Heron, or in the Rangers corp. But alas I am an old man, who can only dream.Another reviewer wrote she has a hard time with Lydia's character. I kind of agree. Something has to be more developed about the sexual tension of young men having a young woman on board a confined ship. Even just little stuff, like relieving yourself. How does that happen? Anyway, another great and adventurous read. Just read it, and enjoy the ride! Flanagan is VERY good at this. He is a clever storyteller, great at creating and maintaining characters, and even though the combined series' of Rangers and Brotherband is getting extensive, none of this feels stale. There are some significant shifts in the way characters are speaking to and about each other - particularly with reference to the relationship between Lydia and Thorn. What has previously been antagonistic, and it times sexist on Thorn's part, has turned into an exploration of the worth of women in a male-dominated world. Cassandra/ Evanlyn and Alyss are both strong characters, but they play second fiddle to the Rangers and the male interactions and friendships. Lydia is an integral and necessary part of the Brotherband - in fact, I can't imagine the series without her commitment to her craft, her high standards, and her standouts refusal to be an accessory to the boys. She is her own person, and my favourite character. This is a cracking read. Get some Brotherband into you!
