Scorpia Rising (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Scorpia RisingAnthony HorowitzPublished in the United KingdomPublished By Walker BooksPublished 03/31/2011Number of pages 402The novel Scorpia Rising by Anthony Horowitz is the ninth book in the Alex Rider series. They are a series of books about a young man named Alex Rider. Alex is a teenage boy who gets sucked into the world of spying. He begins working for MI6, The United Kingdom’s equivalent to the United States CIA. In MI6 he is put into many difficult and life threatening situations that no ordinary teenage boy could handle. The whole series is action packed and will keep you on the edge of your seat.In this book a secret terrorist organization called Scorpia is making an attempt to return the Elgin Marbles to Greece. To do this they plan to blackmail MI6 buy framing Alex with the murder of a high U.S. official. A member of Scorpia named Razim is based in Cairo where he plans to torture Alex. A clone of Alex that was created in the second novel of the series will be conducting the murder of the official. Then they would kill Alex and frame him for the murder. Then Scorpia threatened to tell the U.S. that Alex worked for MI6. This would ruin the reputation of the United Kingdom and destroy the friendship of the two countries. This book is an action pack rollercoaster. It has action and suspense with a hint of drama. This book will keep on the edge of your seat and when you finish reading it you will be begging for more. This book is especially different from the rest of the novels because it is an unexpected tear jerker. With enough action and suspense to give you goose bumps and enough drama to make you want to cry. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was the only book where Alex seemed to literally have no hope of escape. Throughout the whole book, especially after Jack died, it seemed Alex would die. Even though I knew he wouldn't die because that wouldn't be the nature of the author, I was a little bit scared for Alex. When he was sitting in the van it seemed that the plan was going to go through after all, but before the man even started to reach for a cigarette, I knew Alex would make it. It was very sad when Jack Starbright died though, I kept hoping for her to come back even though I knew she wouldn't. She couldn't have possibly survived the explosion. So, after finishing this book I was left with a sense of sadness that Alex would never be the same, but a glimmer of happiness that he would get to resume a normal life. That is probably why I liked the book so much, because the ever-present conflict was resolved.
