Renegade Lover (1993) - Plot & Excerpts

19 year old spoiled, little rich girl Megan falls madly in love with poor Aussie Jake. They marry and get divorced a year later. Jake heads off to the tropics to lick his wounds while Megan runs home to Daddy (and his money). But wait...Daddy is out of money and when he dies, he leaves Megan with nothing but bill collectors knocking on her door. Oh, and did I mention she's pregnant with Jake's baby and he doesn't know?Flash forward six years. Jake is now a millionaire who owns multiple yachts and houses around the globe. He is currently holding a week-long competion among a select number of catering companies for a contract to cater his newest excusive cruise ship (the competion takes place aboard the ship). Megan is struggling to advance her catering business and secure a future for her daughter. Winning the cruise ship contract will acheive both goals.Jake, as owner of the ship, has arranged for Megan to compete. He has never quit lusting after her and figures one last time together should get her out of his system. Megan has never forgotten Jake either. She mistakenly assumes he is on board to play the piano and the two indulge in a week-long affair.Throughout the book I found myself screaming at Jake and Megan (internally of course...I don't like the strange looks I get fom my husband when I yell out loud at book). Neither of them tells the truth...ever. Jake assumes Megan is still rich, Megan assumes Jake is still poor. Jake assumes Megan is still childless (I guess she's one of those lucky stretch mark-less gals). She doesn't bother to correct the assumption. I found it hard to respect either of the characters. In fact, in my notes I actually awarded Jake an "ass of the year" award. I kept waiting for some redeeming aspect of the story to come along. Sadly, it never did. 2.5 stars for me. I've stated I finished, but I can't without getting royally pissed off! I'd rather not...lol. I wished I could have liked this book more but...I didn't buy the reasons behind this heroine's thoughts for keeping their child away from the father. In fact, she was cruel in every sense of the word. SHE left him because she wanted to live in the lap of luxury. Lo & behold it doesn't pan out that way and just because of a short lived marriage that her very young self based every cliched reason on that said husband didn't want children. BS! It was an excuse because she didn't want to admit that she was wrong after losing everything and struggling on her own as a single parent that she placed herself in.NOPE I can't finish this. First off, I skimmed most of it, a lot of the words were pretty much the same. Do they have amazing chemistry. Yes when she isn't denying it. He isn't as bad though he was denying it only because he had been hurt and, come on! He's a guy his ego was bruised, his heart crushed because he was banking on dreams while his young wife was banking on luxury. UGH this book pissed me off. Sure Barbara Bretton swapped their roles out by giving him the turnaround billionaire status and her the rags. I think the attempt was to have his ex-wife step into his shoes while he stepped into hers. Except he handles it better and with class. He doesn't flaunt it. So I may not have finished this...I just couldn't. This heroine pissed me off. I'm a single mother and even my jerk of an ex knows about his child...and is a part of her life. UGH!! I've read that Jenny doesn't take to Jake as quickly...I think that in itself was cruel way to go. IT shouldn't have been Jake who had to work hard, it should have been Megan!!!! Jenny should have been highly curious at her age AND wondering why she never met him or saw him. My own daughter was constantly questioning things at 5/6. Jenny should NOT have been indifferent to him, she should have been intrigued and well a kid who adapts just as she mentions during a daddy talk with her mother! This was just not believable. I may grit my teeth and try to bare through it...but as a single parent this pissed me off. I've read books like this about secret kids BUT I've read better reasons for not telling the father about it. This one just wasn't plausible at all. It was vague and based primarily on a young girls superficial luxurious upbringing that made her assume Jake wouldn't want kids. HE WAS ENJOYING MARRIED LIFE! UGH I hated HATED this heroine. Jake...Jake was better written. BUT he was still written in a way that at times contradicted to what we found out about him. And Bad Boy? Really? He was just sex on legs who fell for Megan hook line and sinker. Left him crushed and he felt things were not settled between them. And not to mention, she too felt this way? God CONSTANT back and forth. Gave me a headache...I'm truly sorry. I just couldn't ease the tension I felt for the plot and the reasons behind a lot of this story. Honestly, I'd rework it finding a better reason so that it flows better. Decent effort...just wasn't for me. Though I wished it was because I love stories like these.
