Real Men Will (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

I really enjoyed this book. I needed a break from vampire romance novels so this contemporary romance set in Boulder, Colorado, was the perfect choice. It was filled with real people in possible situations as apposed to some romance novels that are so totally contrived. Even the event at the convention that starts the whole thing off, I can see it happening. And if they never saw each other again, ya, I bet that happens all the time. Apparently this is the third of a series about the Donovan family & I'm reading them out of order, but que sera sera. I'll be going back to the beginning to read the first one next. Woah! Who knew Eric's book was going to be such a scorcher? I really wasn't expecting to be turned on by starchy, stick-in-the-mud Eric, but I guess all that seriousness and intensity is a plus when it comes to sexy funtimes. I thought Beth's issues were handled very sensitively, even if it was solved too quickly and neatly. Would her father really come around in a heartbeat and admit that he'd been an ass? Somehow I doubt. But, this is fantasy, right? Wouldn't it be nice if we could realize we had an issue and 50 pages later, see it all worked out and put to bed (figuratively) and be ready for a healthy, trusting, all-cards-on-the-table relationship? Well, here's to romance! For real, though, I was impressed with the way Dahl handled Beth's struggle with the fallout of her horrible high school peccadillo. That pernicious double standard is sadly still very much in effect. I'm going to quote a higher authority here: as John Hughes had Allison say in The Breakfast Club, "Well, if you say you haven't, you're a prude. If you say you have you're a slut. It's a trap. You want to but you can't and when you do you wish you didn't, right?"In every Donovan Brothers book, though, I wish the other siblings would take a hike. In Jamie's book, Eric comes off like a stuck-up killjoy, and Tessa like a deranged Barbie doll. In Eric's book, Jamie seems like a shallow, irrational hothead, and Tessa like a deranged Barbie doll. In Tessa's book, everyone sucks and Tessa really *is* a deranged Barbie doll. Luke should just come find me instead. Hey, I gotta tell it like it is.
